if only she was an angel
everything would change
no more hanging around this cross
no more debt to be paid
the world would live in peace
love would find a way
if only she was an angel
there would be nothing wrong today

if only i had the courage
to never speak or say
all the rational thoughts
that drove her away
i would call her name
exalt it from high
if only she was an angel
loneliness would be but a stranger passing by

she came a-knocking, a sweet lost girl, looking for a manger, but all i could give was the world, if only i had fallen from on high, carried down by her angel wings, i would fall into her arms, like a refugee

if only time was incorruptible
the words would be easier to say
and the poverty of the soul
would know the price to pay
for a second in your body
the sweetness of your kiss
if only she was an angel
i could find bliss

the church doors are closed, fenced off, religion is not welcome in, the people line the streets sleeping in the gutter, no voice and no song to sing, Jesus Christ our lord, mohammed, buddha, hubbard, there are no answers for those that seek within

if only she was an angel
everything would change
no more hanging around this cross
no more debt to be paid
the world would live in peace
love would find a way
if only she was an angel
there would be nothing wrong today

the food lines are endless, someone lied today, and the police are coming down heavily, in a brutal show of self defence, the meek and lonely cower praising the dream of democracy, and the heavenly hosts cry 'repent' on ears deafened by discovery

if only she was an angel
everything would change
no more hanging around this cross
no more debt to be paid
the world would live in peace
love would find a way
if only she was an angel
there would be nothing wrong today

the wars are being fought for the thousandth time, the kisses are cooling in the sun, now that the night of discontent has gone, the soldiers are lining up their arms, cold steel to embrace, one carbon form pierces another, in this endless rat race

if only she was an angel
everything would change
no more hanging around this cross
no more debt to be paid
the world would live in peace
love would find a way
if only she was an angel
there would be nothing wrong today

Poignant and sad...

"If only" is an epitaph that could rightly adorn the tombstone of many a grave!

It has a bittersweet quality...

Either part of this would be fine on its own - the conventionally versified parts and the prose interventions - but together they make for a dramatic and moving dialogue. "If only time was incorruptible" is a mysterious, tantalizing thought...
