Just a reminder for those who are interested in celestial fireworks: We mentioned the Perseids meteor shower in the Solar eclipse thread (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36930), and tonight is your chance to see it.
Many of us will also be able to see a lunar eclipse on Saturday 16/8.

How good are the Perseids supposed to be this time around? I usually try to make it out for the good ones. Unfortunately, the common wisdom is that these showers are better when viewed closer to dawn. It would have to be quite a spectacular show to get me out of bed at 5 a.m.

It was so bad here on saturday, its being dubbed a monsoon! This Is Ireland! We dont have Monsoons! 76mm or rain fell withing only a few hours, and within 20mins of the heavens opening, roads where floaded and impassible and traffic was at a standstill.:( And the worst part is there is plenty more to come!

HIt would have to be quite a spectacular show to get me out of bed at 5 a.m.I'm afraid I don't know how spectacular it will be, but I agree that that it is a near death experience to get up at 5am... The problem is that I always get up at that time. Another problem is that during the summer we have but a few hours of semi darkness. It never goes really pitch black.

Our local news station reminds us of every little happening, so I wasn't suprised when I was told that their would be a satellite over-head the other night; of course not as exciting as a meteor shower, but it's at least something isn't it?

I missed it. D:
Nut bunnies. It would seem that most of us missed it, due to poor weather. Perhaps we will be luckier with the lunar eclipse on Saturday 16/8?

Blame it all on Climate Change. I wonder how Al Gore is doing right now?

Yeah, I can't remember if it was foggy or not that night, but I think it was. Now that thought is going to bug me, ha ha.
Hopefully!

Time for the Perseids meteor shower again (Peaks around 12/8): Maybe we will have clear skies this year, so some of us can watch it.

You should look for Perseus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perseus_%28constellation%29). Try north east.

I only saw one meteor because of the clouds but it was a good night. I'm hoping to get out of the city for next year's.

It doesn't finish 'til the 20th, though the peak has passed and gone. Problem is that you need to stay up to the early hours to watch it - you need to wait until Perseus is overhead which, in UK, is between 2am and 4am  We had perfect clear skies on 12th but with work the next day there's no way we could stay up that late.

I saw a few for once, in spite of not staying up too late, and there will always be next year.

I got up but got so ooked out on my balcony (who knows what kind of critters and bugs are lurking around out there - It didn't help that I walked into a spider web) I only stayed out for about 5 minutes and didn't see anything. Next year I'll get up, put on real clothes and go out front.
