Some of you may have noticed - I'm back!

We went to Turkey for two weeks and then redecorated our study. The computer had to be disconnected - for a week, I thought. But things always take longer than you think. First I had to pack all my books (!) into boxes, then all the shelves and the wallpaper had to be taken down, the carpet and the desks removed.

New carpet, new wallpaper, old shelves, new desks and chairs, old books, old computer - no internet. We simply couldn't get it working and had to wait for help. But now everything is spic and span and working - and I'm back on LitNet - yay! :D :D :D

Thanks, Sleepy. :D

I ended up with fifteen big removal boxes and several of the big volumes and all the files standing on the floor of the dining-room. I guess I have about 2,500 books. (No boasting, I'm a book buyer rather than a borrower.)

That's quite the achievement. I can't manage to stay off for a few hours. .

No achievement, I'm afraid - it wasn't voluntary ...

Five weeks?
How did you survive? What's your secret?
I can't refrain from logging on just for a day, haha.

My secret?

At the beach it was easy - sand, sea, some good books.
At home: Tried not to think about it (failed). Busied myself with other things. :crash:

barbara, I had a similiar experience recently, but thanks to some very thoughtful and generous friends I am now back online. My computer died and now I have a brand new one and I fully pictured a nightmare getting my broadband to work on this computer, but oddly enough with Vista, it just went and retrieved the program and I was connected, just like that - so easy!
I was so relieved and happy to be able to again post on Lit Net. I know what you mean about going into withdrawal. Luckily I could go and use my library's computers but that is never the same as logging on at home; also the time was so limited and they are closed on weekends so I was at a total loss then and had to rely on my phone for all outside communication; but unfortunately most of my friends are too far away to call...I went into IM withdrawal the most. I still am to reload the program so I can talk to my far-away friends live.
Your new room and set up sounds worth the wait. It truly sounds like a nice place to have your computer and do work. Enjoy it!

barbara, so sorry you had some much of a problem getting back online. I know once my DSL modem got hit with a power surge and it took me a whole day speaking to a support person to figure out how to get me reconnected.

Hooray!!! Barbara is back. :) I was wondering when you would come back. Turkey must have been wonderful. It's one of those places I would love to visit. Such history. I'm an ancient history buff if you didn't know.

And by the way Barbara, I'm finishing up John Banville's The Sea and while I'm not quite going as far as you in my opinion, I do think you're right for the most part. I'm not sure if you gone to the thread and caught up with some of the comments. I did enjoy Banville's writing style, but the story is structurally flawed if you ask me.

Yes, Janine, the new room was worth it and I do enjoy it now.

The problem is, I'm completely at a loss where hardware is concerned. And then to think it took our helper just 20 minutes to connect DSL - and to clear up the hard disk into the bargain. *Sigh*

Thanks, Virgil. Yes, Turkey was wonderful. But when we go there in the summer, we can't look at the sights. It's simply too hot for us. We just enjoy the sun and the beach.

I'm sorry to say I haven't caught up with reading all the interesting threads. I'll certainly have a look at the Banville comments.

I've also read 'The Road' during the holidays, and I've read some of the comments. But I think the thread is 'dead' so I didn't make any comments of my own. Pity!

No thread is dead Barbara, unless the mods close it of course. I would be very interested in your comments on The Road.

Right, Virgil, if you say so. I'll do some more reading of comments and will post my thoughts. :)

Barbara, Yes, reconnecting can be tricky; but some people can do it all in seconds - my son is like that. I could not believe that I had no problem this time around. I have tried to educate myself to the inner workings of the computer and how Windows functions; my friends are good at this and have showed me a lot to help keep my PC running smoothly and virus free; I have been reading much too on this new computer. If you need any pointers, let me know. I do know how to go about certain maintance things and try and keep up with that; otherwise, your computer will slow up and get bogged down. From my last experience, I also know how important it is to back up all your files. I was sorry I had not backuped up my Windows program - in which case I might have been able to revive my old computer, although it was definitely time (actually overdue) for a new one.

Thanks for the kind offer, Janine, I'll come back to you when I need help. :)

And thanks for your words of welcome, Niamh and Pensive. :)

Oh, and Niamh, would you mind not calling me Babs if you can help it? Reminds me of a childhood bully ...
