Brightman's voice, I am afraid, has lost what little it had, by means of over singing. I trust nothing she sings, being that she often uses technology to heighten it.

The opening ceremonies were amazing. I have never seen anything like that globe with people suspended from it and the athelete who lighted the torch - amazing graphics and feats of engineering...the whole event was so beautiful and well planned out. I commend the Chinese for their classy hosting start; it is something they well deserve to be proud of. I enjoyed seeing each country's team enter the statium, many dressed exquistitely and colorfully,... and the fireworks were incredible.

I like Sara Brightman, but to be quite honest with you, I could not understand a word from the two singers - I have no idea what that song was because I don't believe I ever heard it before. I too, found that part a bit disappointing. Maybe our volume was not turned up high enough but it seemed other things overshadowed that part out, so that the singing was kind of anticlimatic.

I think I am looking forward to all of the events, although I doubt I will have time to view them all - just snatches here and there of some. I like the gymnastics especially, too.

Papayahed, that is a long list - thanks for posting it. I did not realise there were that many events.

Good for the US - my home team - winning so many metals so far! Yah, go team go!

Here you go Papaya:

Sydney, 2000: The Games are the first to include women's weightlifting, and the addition provided emerging China with another bounty of medals. All four Chinese lifters won gold, including super heavyweight (75+kg/165+ lbs) Ding Meiyuan. Finishing third in Ding's class was 17-year-old Cheryl Haworth of Savannah, Georgia. Also at these Games, Colombia earned its first Olympic gold when Maria Isabel Urrutia won the 75kg (165.5 lbs) title.

The USA "Redeem Team" beat China in basketball 101-70. Phelps won a gold medal and shattered the WORLD record in the 400m individual medley.

I think the original world record for the 400m IM was set by Phelps at 4:05.25. He just beat it with 4:03.84. That's by 1.41 seconds!

well, at this end of the world, the highlights so far have all been sitting down on the water.

Despite being one of the least-populous nations on show, our rowers have been dominant in the Olympic regatta: 8 teams, of which 6 have won their heats and the other two second.

Bring on the rowing finals!

(The cycling's been great, too!)

Some Brit took gold in the cycling, if I remember correctly.

That sounds a bit like damnation by faint praise.

The Brit in question was the outstanding road cyclist Nicole Cooke (http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/BIO/Athlete/0/225120.shtml).

Despite having worked hard all race, sharing the chasing with USA, Italy and Germany, Nicole rode the perfect race, positioning herself exactly where she wanted in the last 1 km, ultimately taking the lead with 25m to go - a rare position in a road race because that is plenty of time for someone to come off your back. Nicole backed herself to fight off all challengers and with creative use of the road's width, she managed it magnificently. Her gold will no doubt go down as the hardest-won female cycling gold yet awarded.

This is my first Olympics where I've actually paid attention and I can't say that I've done a flawless job in doing so. :p I'm more concerned with Team USA, anyway. I know only a few names, most a part of the US team.

As for the guys cycling, all I can report is that some Spanish guy won.

Oh my heart just went out to the young Chinese gymnist (sorry I didn't catch the name) that fell off the parallel bars. She was brilliant up to that point and favored to win the gold but a little error and she lost it. The poor girl was struggling to fight back tears. She still got a half way decent score but she will not be able to medal I'm afraid.

Is it just me, or is NBC's coverage of the Olympics absolutely horrendous? I have yet to see a single tennis match (I can't even find the scores online), and whenever I set my VCR to watch the USA men's basketball team play, I get up only to find that instead they air a special Olympic edition of the Today show, replete with human interest stories. But I've managed to catch about FOUR men's beach volleyball matches. How lame is that?

Over here they constantly show equitation, because these are the only sports where Germany wins lots of medals (probably that's because noone but us has noticed that horse-riding is olympic :p).

Have you noticed that the stadiums are often more empty than full, especially when there are team sports (I saw it in women's football)? I think many Chinese would like to buy tickets but simply cannot afford them. This doesn't seem to be organised too well.

Over here they constantly show equitation, because these are the only sports where Germany wins lots of medals (probably that's because noone but us has noticed that horse-riding is olympic :p).

Don't know what you mean, I've watched all kinds of sports. There are lots of sorts shown that outside the Olympics hardly get any attention (probably not only here in Germany).

It's the old problem: lots of tickets are given to sponsors and other companies as well as to VIPs. Many of them don't choose to come to the stadiums. It has been suggested that seats should only be reserved up to a certain time and then given away to people who really want to watch. But I don't know if the committee will do it.

The US women’s gymnastics team look so sour! Every time they show their faces I miss Mary Lou! Would it kill these girls to smile? It’s almost like they are trying to look like mean girls.

I was watching the women's gymnastics for the first time last night and I see what you mean! That Nastia girl!

And look how far ahead he is from everyone else. ==> This (http://www.patrickmoberg.com/website/images/illustration/public/regular/patrickmoberg_illustration_106_450px.jpg)is the explanation.

Up to now he has won more&more than my whole country win. :)

That's shocking! Just shocking! I had to laugh reading that. I think my stomach would bust if I tried eating like that. I know he’s burning it with all of that swimming, but how does his stomach hold it? Can you imagine watching him eat all of that? I mean how long does he have? It would take hours. It’s really kind of gross to think about. thanks for the link

I just returned from a week of training at the most prestigious shooting school in America. There were about 30 highly-trained combat soldiers going through a high-intensity, stress-based training regimine. So how did we spend our evenings? Instead of going out and chasing women in Memphis, or working on our training fundamentals, my entire team would gather around the living room TV to drink beer and watch the Olympics. It was pretty funny to see this group of men getting extremely fired-up while watching synchronized diving or the 200m IM. We even turned off a preseason NFL game to watch women's gymnastics. We were getting into (sometimes heated) arguments about whether 'gymnast A' should have a higher starting difficulty than "gymnast B," because she has a blind landing on her dismount and the like... :)

 It wouldn't fit in my stomach. And to do it every day. I can see feasting out once in a while (although even at a feast I can't do a quarter of that) but every day.

This brought a tear to my eye:

The Canadian's coaches then hoisted her on their shoulders and paraded her around the stadium with the Canadian flag.

Huynh's victory came less than 20 minutes before Tonya Verbeek of Beamsville, Ont., won the bronze medal in the 55-kg weight class.

She began crying on the podium, wiping away tears and singing as the Canadian anthem was played for the first time at the Beijing Games.

"I was just thinking how proud I am to be Canadian," Huynh said of her reaction. "And I was just thinking about the road to how I got here. It's been a long one but a good one."

Canada's first medal of the 2008 Summer Games was a silver won by rowers David Calder and Scott Frandsen, but it was Huynh who guaranteed the country's first, fighting her way to the gold medal final earlier in the day Saturday.

Marvelous!

Couldn't agree more. There are a quite a few sports which just don't belong there. Trampolining?

And on to the really important stuff!

New Zealand, having had 0 medals until yesterday, hit the boards with the greatest day ever at the Olympics - 2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze!

This haul, which will be added to, puts us ahead of some fairly notable countries: Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Cuba and Holland, to name a few.

NZ (like our pals, Australia) has always been recognised as playing well above our weight in international sports. To give you an idea, on a per head of population basis, USA would have to have 180 golds to equal our 2, while China would need around 500.

Go Kiwi!!

Hey thanks for that link Equality.

Found the answer question on Phelps' IPod playlist:

While his pre-race tracklist varies, Phelps has said that "I'm Me" by Lil' Wayne has been on his playlist in Beijing. The track, off Weezy's EP "The Leak" features the line:

Yes I am the best/and no I ain't positive I'm definite/I know the game like I'm reffing it

That's about the only lyric that's printable on a family blog.

Other artists that populate Phelps' iPod include: Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, Eminem and Outkast. (What, no 'Pac?) Occasionally, he'll throw some techno into the mix, but usually keeps things rap-centric. Phelps doesn't speak much about the specific songs he's listening to, but he did tell NBC in 2004 that Eminem's "'Til I Collapse" was on his most-played list at Athens. In 2005, he created a playlist for the website Rhapsody that included the songs "Roses" by Outkast, "Burn" by Usher, "Overnight Celebrity" by Twista and "Smile" by G-Unit.

There is a game like that and it is called handball in lots of places. The official name for is it "Fives" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fives).

It's also a lot more entertaining that the handball at the Olympics. Keeps your concentration level up as well - as kids our school had fives courts made from concrete block. Great game.

I just trust the drug agency to catch the cheats and trust that the others haven't simply got away with it. The amount Bolt is better than the others is reminiscent of Flo-Jo and Ben Johnson, however...

Russia is overrated. Very overrated. Except Kirilenko and Holden, they don't really good players, and everyone knows that. Holden is in bad form, Kirilenko closed or left on max 15-20 points and Russia went home quickly. Bogut is good enough to handle with Kirilenko, and Australia won easily.

Only one victory for us today :( Huge disappointing in water polo...

Afghan medalist wins a house, cheers from country
By AMIR SHAH and RAHIM FAIEZ, Associated Press Writers
8 hours, 19 minutes ago

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP)—Noor Ahmad Gayezabi said a silent prayer while watching the small family TV with his 13-year-old son. “Help Nikpai. Help Nikpai. Help Afghanistan.”

Then he watched his country win its first-ever Olympic medal.

Rohullah Nikpai defeated world champion Juan Antonio Ramos of Spain on Wednesday to earn the bronze medal in the men’s under 58-kilogram taekwondo competition, sparking applause, wide smiles and laughter in homes, restaurants and ice cream parlors around the country.

“When I saw that he won, I jumped up and hugged and kissed my son,” Gayezabi said. “I was crying.”

President Hamid Karzai immediately called to congratulate Nikpai. He also awarded him a house at the government’s expense, said Humayun Hamidzada, the president’s spokesman. [Snip]
