I know that Cat on A hot Tin Roof was bowdlerised on film but the ending:

*SPOILER*
of the film, where brick tells maggie that they are through with lies and liars then seduces her, I think is actually quite effective because their marriage and this pretence is the biggest lie of all as brick is gay

Are there any books like that- a sort of ironic happy ending?

Great Expectations has two, actually. Dickens wanted to end the novel on a more realistic note, where Pip cannot win Estella. A colleague thought Dickens' audience would not accept this, so Dickens wrote a second last chapter where Pip gets his girl. My edition has both endings.

They changed the end of Monte Christo in the French film... It would have become too ong otherwise... In the English version they just changed the whole story... :flare: In the French version he went back to Mercédès...

They changed the end of Sense and Sensibility in the version with Hugh Grant, I think (?)... My class made a book review about the book, thinking about Jane Austen being absolutely not so boring for them, I suppose... Anyway, they couldn't finish it apparently, because the teacher all got book reviews with a different ending than the book's... They al watched the film the evening before...:p
