View Full Version : A Day at the Barber's

One day I woke up and my hair had grown out
Not just down but up and around all about
You don’t understand when my hair grows too long
I look like a forest where elves compose songs

I decided to go to my barber named Jack
He is an old man but no talent he lacks
Been cutting my hair since before I did know
That hair did need cut just like lawns do need mowed

His place it is up and just right by my house
A typical shop for just any old louse
I opened the door and to my great dismay
I was first in line for a cut on that day

With soft hum he took out his electric shears
He cut round my head and cut back ‘round my ears
He took out his scissors, the tools of his trade
And began to snip off my bountiful shade

And while he was cutting, I guess to be kind
He started to ask about what’s on my mind
I wasn’t quite sure just how I should reply
‘Cause I don’t think I am your typical guy

I mentioned the books that I recently read
I mentioned the films that had jumped in my head
I skipped all the weird stuff like Japanimation
And all of my friends that I have ‘round the nation

Of course they all happen to just be online
But isn’t that weird to think they’re friends of mine?
I then tried to think about topics quite gen’ral
My mind drew a blank and the chat was ephem’ral

The silence it pierced through the room and so loud
It echoed in my head and rang through the crowd
The space it was pregnant with awkward intent
In my head at least where it crashed in descent

The cut it was over and my hair was new
In summer it felt nice to have a short ‘do
I paid in cold cash and I went out the door
Went home to reflect and just lay on the floor

I must’ve imagined how bad it all was
My head it played tricks just like it always does
The isolation’s not as bad as it seems
If it is I’ll have comp’ny at least in my dreams

I really liked this, I love the sort of nursey rhyme quality of the poem and I found it quite amusing.

I hate hair-cuts!!! The less hair over time that I am left with, the more intense my hatred grows!! It isn't because I have to pay ten bucks whether I have 100 hairs to be contended with or fifty...no discounts for ongoing sparseness nor increase of decrease!

Having got that of my chest, (even less hair there!) I congratulate you on a poem of rhyme and sensitivity, of understatement and poetic licence...:)

Thanks to you both.

@Dark Muse: The nursery rhyme quality comes from the anapestic tetrameter (which I have a tendency of always cutting the head off for some reason) which is often used in children's rhymes.

@goldenrod: I guess too much hair is better than not enough, but my hair is too high maintenance for me to enjoy it. See, I'm a redhead, and I think a recent study showed redheads have more hair per-inch on their head than anyone else. And when my hair grows it grows thick and out... that forest line really isn't an understatement!
