Have you read the book? It's pretty short.
The book criticizes Puritanism's narrow-minded hypocrisy.
One woman becomes the target of village judgment, the scapegoat for their own weaknesses.
I suspect your teacher wants you to give examples.
You could make two columns and list them:
Puritan Belief ------- Characters' behavior
Adultery is sinful. --- Even the town's leaders commit adultery.
Make the list as long as you can, then write your essay. It will be easy, then.
If you haven't read it, read the book. ;)

... :p i wish these posts would just say upfront: 'hey i didn't read no damn book and i don't desire to, can you tell me the answer to my question ?'
The only problem is, many times the forum hasn't just read the book so they can't write a whole paper on it for you out of memory necessarily.

you know, maybe if all these "asking for homework help"ers would be a little smarter and disguise their question somewhat, they might get some help. (i've actually done that, but i did read part of the book. :p)

 I'll admit... I've been lazy before, too :D Of course, I've only recently discovered the amazingly large number of people who are actually willing to give assistance on the internet... if you phrase the question to make it seem like you've already done all the research/work, and you just need some "confromation" :brow:

Hi!
Don't forget that the puritan leaders are "iron men", hard-hearted men who don't see that people can improve. hester's A is read as able by the "multitude" while Governor Belingham still sees Hester as a whore . He has not taken into account her new life of good works.
Bye!

 hope it helps!
