I remember an english teacher when I was younger reading this to the class. The story was about a wife who was being held hostage by the enemy. They had rigged a musket to fire when her husband opened the door. The story goes, the wife hears the hoof beats of her husbands horse and fires the musket herself to warn him.

It sounds like The Highwayman by Noyes - but that's a poem not a short story.

It is certainly similar to The Highwayman, but is there not a story by O'Henry (or is it Ambrose Bierce?) that uses a similar device?

I agree with kasie (though I would not have been able to provide the title or author). Wow brings back memories of my mom reading to my sister and I of Fair Bingen on the Rhine and the Children's Hour. Thanks for the nostalgia!
