I started reading the Bantam Books version of the book and it really seemed as if the story was being rushed. Knowing that it was abridged, I checked Amazon for other versions of the book, only to discover that it was les than half the length of others. Still, there are several versions that look acceptable and I wondered if anybody could direct me to the best translation.

I always have difficult find good translations, too. I have never felt unsatisfied, however, with any translation (in any language) with 'Penguin Books;' they give not only excellent translations, but also interesting in-depth introductions and footnotes always worth reading.
Good luck!

Thank you so much! Coincidentally, that was my first choice too. It was hard to find recommendations, but I saw one for the translation by Robin Buss, which is the Penguin version. Thanks again.
