View Full Version : A Watcher in the Night

There is a watcher in the night
Who, while we sleep, breathing
In and out, at rest in the Cimmerian
Land set all about with black plumes
Nodding, the cries of peacocks and
Chimeras ringing, soothes our restless
Wandering minds if dreams disturb
Us; who whispers in our ears the
Words we want to hear; who, if we start up,
Cry out, pulls up the covers, soothes the
Fevered brow, and tiptoes out, as dawn
Brings rosy light to sleepy eyes, leaving
In his wake a thousand, thousand thoughts,
A blaze of glory, an assurance that we
Could awake and voice the hidden
Thought and make it real. And so we do.

What a comforting thought, though clouded in mystery! I have had voices that scared and others that comforted, and I infinitely preferred the latter...

This was interesting, I liked the imagery, and I liked the lore you referenced and the mention of the peacocks I thought was cool

Yes, I agree with others. Very good imagery! Lovely poem! I liked this poem very much. In the time of despair, this poem has been soothing one. Thanks for sharing this poem. Great! :thumbs_up

Thank you, Goldenrod, Dark Muse, and dibyendra. I'm glad you each found something in my poem to take away with you.

I enjoyed the comforting yet recondite quality of your poem and agree with those who admire it for its imagery. There was, for me, a disquieting undercurrent within the reassuring framework (like whistling in the dark) that I found interesting and provocative.

Thank you for reading it and responding to it. I'm glad you found something in it to think about. I think a poem should do that, and I feel complimented that mine did that for you. Thanks!:D
