Need help remenbenreng a movie (which may also be a book, I can't really remenber)

I watched this movie (which may also be a book) when I was a little girl. It was about this kid who was born really tiny in this African village, then there's this huge animal stuck in the village's water supply and he finds it and helps the village. There's this witch who was so beautiful the men on her village stuck a thorn on the middle of her back, where she can't reach. So she's evil. Then the kid battles the witch and gets the thorn out. Somehow he turns into a man and marries the witch (who isn't evil anymore). Then he goes to his village, but nobody will recognize him, except his mother.

Any ideas of which movie or book this may be?
