What it means to be human? Perhaps, having the benefit of free thinking? That seems to be one of the main points, I believe.

I don't know whether Orwell ever considered that - but I guess the question is valid.

Orwell's cynicism highlights a few things:

Gullibility
Power-hungry
Search for ultimate truth

I think Johann means that free thinking is an essential part of keeping our humanity. Without that, we are just rovots - or in 1984 Party Members.
