I'll be traveling in Argentina and Chile this spring, and I'd like to do some reading before I go. I have lots on my list for non-fiction, but I far prefer to read historical fiction....as per Michener. I'd like to keep it in English.

Does anyone have any titles to suggest?

Hmm.. I only know of one off the top of my head.

Martin Eden by Jack London. Very time period of 1900-esque and I read it in my American History course here at college. Really good, somewhat interesting at least.

Er, didn't know you wanted Chilean historical fiction..oops. heh, ignore this..

In Argentina, try some Jorge Luis Borges or Adolfo Bioy Casares, or maybe even Julio Cortazar. Although they're fiction writers, I don't think they qualify as historical fiction. But maybe you'll find them interesting.
Tabac, if you tell me what part of Argentina you'll visit, perhaps I can point you to some english bookstores.

Good recommendation with Jorge Luis Borges, crisaor. I would encourage anyone to read his many short stories.

Isabel Allende is an excellent writer of Chilean historical fiction. It's rather recent history (unlike some of Michener's stuff) but she's an excellent novelist, and also happens to be the niece of one of the revolutionary politicians (Salvador Allende - socialist leader who was democratically elected then later assasinated by Pinochet) that shaped part of Chile's recent history. Makes for an excellent perspective.

I'd recommend starting with _The House of the Spirits._

I've received some good ideas - and I thank you all for them.
