Mary Whitehouse started a campaign in the '60's to clean-up television, but was she right? Does censoring content go against freedom of speech or is it necessary to protect people?

I don't know if she was right or wrong, but I will point out that all the things that they don't show on public access TV are shown on subscription TV, so in a way, you could say that her actions had some part in the creation of an industry.
In general, I don't see what's wrong with maintaining some level of deceny and I think it's interesting how standards change over the years, and what used to be unnacceptable is now broadcast on public access TV.
Like the fact that the Brady Bunch parents slept in two twin beds. We've come a long way since then.

Personally, from what I know on the effects of violence on tv affecting peoples behaviour, especially young children, etc. I think that things on at the times that young children are likely to be watching should be censored, yeah. But other things... well... It's up to the people what they watch, they're mature enough to know what they want to watch and what they can handle.
Also it's hard though because some things might be offensive to some people - but should things be censored just to please them when it doesn't upset other people?

I certainly think that there should be warnings of content. Obviously if a programme is entitled 'The joys of severed limbs' and is shown @ 1am, then one would probably not watch it. But if it's a primetime tv programme which seems okay but then randomly has something in which is inappropriate, that's the point of ofcom.
