A couple of the other hominids and I
were sitting around chewing the fat
of the mastodon we’d clubbed,
ripped apart and had eaten raw, fire
being about two centuries into the future,
when Gurk-the-Impatient said,

“Man, this pre-historic life
is getting boring -“
“I think you mean paleolithic,”
said Samos who would have been
a pedant had learning been invented.

“Whatever,” says Gurk, “this day
has been the pits. All we did
is all we ever do: hunt wooly mammoths
or mastodons, scratch ourselves,
jump up and down on bumps-in-front--“

“BIG bumps in front!”

“Whatever, and try to think up names for things.
I’m just about ready to give up!”

“Well,” I say, “there’s always when-big-hot-thing-up-above
-that-lights-everything-up-then-goes-away-and-comes-back-again...
(We really ought to get a shorter name for it.)”

“How about ‘moon’?” says Samos.
“‘Moon’ sounds good to me,” I say:
“There’s always when-moon-goes-away-and-then-comes-back-again..”

“Let’s call it ‘tomorrow’ for short,” says Samos.
“OK, tomorrow! Tomorrow sounds good to me.
Everything will be different
tomorrow! Everything
will be wonderful tomorrow!”

Fine poem, and something one can weave out of imagination and what will be the fate of human beings.

I do not have the right to judge brilliant but that is what I give it.

Very interesting poem! Different, even if it reminds me of your "priorities" excerpt from your book. (which was in itself wonderful!).
The last stanza is great in the way it resonates, and how powerful it becomes for us who are in the tomorrow. Yes, everything is different, but not wonderful.
Something in me wants to come back to this:

“this day
has been the pits. All we did
is all we ever do: hunt wooly mammoths

Apart from hunting mammoths, because that's not nice. But apart from this, it seems to be somehow better and less destructive than what humans do nowadays.

Wow! And you swear on you Aunt Ethel's favourite anti-macassar that you're not an easy....marker?

How sweet you are! My little angel, with just enough of the devil to keep you from ever being dull!

A fun, fun poem to find on my first day back. A delightful offering full of humor, creativity, and cleverness. Thanks! :)
