View Full Version : Tanned?

It seems that every time I pick up a magazine it has some article or other about tanning. Or bronzer. Or tanning lotion.
What's up with Americans and tanning? Don't they realize it's strange? Why are all these magazines talking about it all of a sudden?

I am somewhat darker than I usually am: I just spent two weeks in Greece. Apart from that, I get my tan (usually a rather feeble affair) while I work in the garden or take the bike for a spin...

I'm fair skinned so it's hard for me to get a tan. If I really work at it, I could get a semi-decent tan, but I don't have alot of time to just lay around in the sun.

I don't really think it's all of the sudden, anybody remember the Ban de Soleil ads from the 70's? the tanning beds of the 80's?
I'm naturally slightly dark but I do like to sit by the pool every once in a while and I do think a little tan looks good.
Tanning beds and all those means of getting tanned not involving manual labor or outdoor recreational activities (not tanning! :p) are silly if you ask me. Tan = skin damage. Looks wonderful; I never knew damage could look so attractive. Don't complain to me when you get skin cancer!
The hype is not getting a tan (after all, everyone worth talking to has a tan!), but not getting tan lines. I can't get through a day without some girl complaining about tan lines.
Then there's always this jealous group of girls that complain about how dark another girl looks...
It never ends!
However, I must confess, I really do think darker haired/skinned girls are more attractive.
I spent the day outside without my shirt on so I suppose I did get something that resembles a tan. But I was mowing the lawn so I was covered in grass too! :p

what on earth are tan lines?
I have a tan because I swim and can't be bothered to use sun screen. but seeing as a I (obviously) wear a swim suit, I've got a really dark circle and a white cross on my back. hurray, it looks really sexy  nope, not really.
I can't normally be bothered to get a tan because lying around in the sun makes me feel bored and restless. plus, I'm more or less fair skinned so it takes me ages to get a tan and then it's all gone again after 3 days..... so... nope, I've really got other things to do.

I don't tan, I burn so I don't stay in the sun as long as I used to. I do however think a tan looks nice as long as it looks natural.

You have tan line on your back (the white cross). The tan line is where the tan ends and your usual skin color starts.

I think tanned skin looks good when it's natural. Some people tan better than others. I am fair skinned and I loved spending time at the pool and the beach when I was younger so I hope I don't develop skin cancer. Spray on tans are a disaster and I don't want to lay out in the sun or get ring worm in the tanning bed, so I will just be a fair skinned lady and I am fine with that.

Oh I clicked shun tans. They are not good for your skin. Not only does it increase the risk of skin cancer it accelerates the wrinkles . I've seen people who live in the Arizona desert look ten years older. If I knew I coud click more than one I would also say I have a bit of a tan from working in the garden.
But Shalot's post above reminded me of a hilarious episode of Friends. I don't watch the show but my wife likes it and it's on many times. I usually don't think much of the show but one epsode did have me rolling in laughter. It's an episode where one of the characters (I'm told his name is Ross) tries to get a spray tan. Here I found it on youtube. It's a must wach:

I am not too sure which one to vote for. Basically, I do try to avoid the sun the best that I can. I have sensitive and very fair skin. So not only do I burn easily, my burns are pretty bad. I just got a sunburn recently, while on vacation, that was borderline torture because it was so painful.
After the burn comes the tan. I hate this now because I had this same thing happen two years ago. Only my left arm was burnt from the car window. I swear that the tan lasted for the entire year until summer came around for it to burn/tan all over again. That is how it is now. I am seriously worried about the fact that this severe burning will result in something worse a little later on in life.
So, no, I will not tan my skin by choice. I just don't see the purpose to it for me. Forget the fact of my skin burning easily and the fear of cancer. I don't want my skin to eventually turn into leather or make my skin look like a prune.

 Wasn't that terrible?!? How did it happen like that? I didn't normally watch this show but I saw this episode when it was first on. How did things like that happen to Ross? That also reminds me of the time that he whitened his teeth and the were glowing. :p But that is a different topic all together. :)
Anyway, I do get tan because of the burn from having to be outside for whatever reason (if I have forgotten to put on sunblock!). But I do avoid it. So I guess I will vote for shunning tans.

I laughed so hard I woke my husband up in the other room.
I have a very fair complexion. I had some really bad burns as a child and now I really try to avoid over exposure. I got burned in October once. I have freckles and they get a little darker when I’m in the sun. I’ve never really had a tan- I go from lobster red to snow white and never reach tan. But this year my arms look less white.
I’ve had the same doctor for ever now, but I went through a few trying to find a doctor I liked. For about a decade any new doctor I used would want to check for anemia. They would always act surprised when it came back normal even though I would tell them that it would.
My sister is so tan. When she was young she was a lifeguard. Her hair would bleach out from the sun and chlorine a bit, and her skin would be so so dark. We’ve had people not believe that we were sisters thinking that she was black. I could understand it.
Anyway- I had some sun on my arms and I could tell a difference from my upper arms. So I was out in the garden a few days ago and it was hot so I decided to take off my shirt for a few minutes while I picked the last bit of beans. I got a little crispy but my husband was very happy to help with the rest of the beans that day. That’ll be enough sun for me for a while.

I'm a freak of nature when it comes to tanning. My mother is of pale-skinned European descent, and my dad is Blackfoot Indian (he hates the term "Native American"), so I have naturally pale skin. The minute I step into the sun, however, I turn brown. I'm left with the world's worst farmer's tan... my arms and lower legs are really tan, the rest of me is really pale. I never seem to burn though, which is nice.

Tans are awful.
I have one in because I live in Southern California, but I am still relatively pale in comparison to lots of people that I know.
Unnatural tans look hideous. When people really work at getting a tan they start to get a plastic brown look to their skin and it makes them look like Barbie. Or Ken.

It's really really easy to get a tan here just by being out walking around the beach or foreshore for a day, for those who do tan. During summer I always get a tan, and it always disappears during winter. In summer Australia is really sunny - it lives up to its stereotype sometimes . I'm not one to go and try and get a tan though. Sometimes if I go swimming in the pool I'll lay out on a towel afterwards, with sunscreen, sunglasses, music and a book. Thats kind of the only time I'm out in the sun for the purpose of being out in the sun.
I remember last year, a friend of mine got a fake tan.
She turned ORANGE.
(She actually turned that orange there ^)

I know somebody that took pills that would supposedly help with tanning. This person turned orange and the color came off onto their clothes. It was horrible.

I find that many people think that tanned skin looks good. And, there are lotions and medicines too to get a tan. Wow!
I must be living in the wrong place.
I have a dark skin (you can make that out if you see my picture in the litnet album), and here its just not considered attractive. When I go out in the Sun it becomes even darker. We get cremes / lotions and all sorts of beauty treatment to look fairer, and this mania has spread to the guys as well  If I get a clean-up done and my complexion looks improved, I find people saying oh you look fairer.
It is sooo opposite from what is there in the West.

fake tans are wrong. Having a slight natural healthy glos of a tan is good, but painting oneself orange is stupid. too many ompa lompas walking around.

This is what I found when I moved to England, it made me laugh so hard in egypt people are always buying fair and lovely to make themselves whiter, but in the west people are constatly running after a tan.
Its a case of the grass is always greener I think

Well Im sort of the opposite, 2 of my sisters are sort of like that except that they go really really brown everywhere once a little part of them is exposed to the sun, the other 2 are slightly tanned looking all year round but get a really healthy brown glow when the sun comes out. And then there is me who never ever evre tans I just go lobster red and peel, Ive had sun burns from beeing out in the sun at 730 in the morning for goodness sake!
but I hate sun cream with avengence becasue of the greasy feel so never where it, although my mum did buy a rather nice one this year that didnt feel to greasy, but I forgot to bring it with me , which I should have done I guess.
I do love the smell of sun screen though, its the smell of summer for me. :D
But I do think that natural tans look great especially when accompanied by the shiny healthy skin look, but then I cant reallyu complain too much bout my skin, Im very lucky , and I did have this random guy once ( who might have been rather drunk at the time ) cme up to me and say can I tough your face.. how DO you get your skin like that Ive tried EVERYTHING what lotions do you use ( umm nothing) and you know this is a real compliment because gay guys wouldnt even talk to you if you were ugly.. at which point he finally moved out my way and I was able to go back to my room in peace shaking my head and laughing the whole way)

I inherited my mother's fair skin so I burn - my dad only had to go outside to do a bit of gardening and he came back the colour of teak, but he had worked out of doors in his youth so I wonder if the foundation was laid then and he just topped it up each summer! I don't particularly want to get deeply tanned but it would be nice to be able to venture out in the sun without turning into a lobster. :D
I was at the checkout in the supermarket the other day and the woman in front of me was a vivid orange - I was just about to say, 'Oh, you poor thing, whatever happened?' when I realised that this was probably a rather expensive shade of orange and bit my tongue just in time, a rare example of me opening mouth and not inserting foot.

I don't like tan and try to avoid being tanned. Whenever I go out, I use sunscreen. In my city I'm not fair-skinned but as I lived for two years in another city, there I was fair skinned. My friends tell me you should return there. And this is because of the lake it really makes my skin dark.

It is right here, too. Fair skinned is prefered here, although there are people who try to be tanned.

I couldn't agree more with you, Virgil. I'm pale, but I always wanted to have darker skin...Personally I like my fair complexion but all my relatives and acquaintances all the time are telling me: "You're always so pale... It looks like you have an anemia, it's unhealthy... etc." It's very annoying, because even if I want to have darker skin, I can't. When I'm spending too much time on the beach, I always have sunburns after that. And any of sunscreen doesn't help me... It's weird why when you're tanned, people never ask if you had an anemia or if you were sick. But when you have a pale complexion there're a lot of people who ask about your health...

Yeah, i know what you mean. My mum is whitr/indian and my dad is mulatto so my skin is always kind of a golden colour. Even if I stay away from sunlight or bathe is sunblock it's still a light gold. I envy those pale, pale people.
Even when I had anemia, it was still gold! :bawling:

I'm mostly in the no tan category. I go outside, but I burn instead of tanning. I'm just gold enough to not be entirely pasty white:D I'll get there, but I've not got hours to just lie about in the sun. Anything that I get is because of yard work and time spent outside with the kids. As a result, I'll never have a good tan, and I can't make sense of spending money just to get a fake one.

Tanning is synonymous with skin damage for me :p
I got a tan summer of 2002 from swimming and swore I will never get one again.
It was hell! My skin was a sick shade of pink until it (painfully) peeled off to my natural color .

I have rather pale, and rather sensitive skin; getting a tan is not quite natural for me, nor I take it very well, so to prevent it I use high SPF and avoid sun. Not that I would want to be tanned anyway - I prefer "aristocratic pale" skin. :D
