Who would they be? I'm talking about if you run into some shady guys in an alley or have to talk your way out of an audit, or just to hang out with, which fictional character would you want as a sidekick?

Odd inquiry I know, but I'm pretty curious. Mine? This will take some thought...

For some reason,I immediately thought of Ford Prefect.

I honestly think it would be wicked to hang out with Holden Caufield from "the Catcher in the Rye." It would intrigue me to see how his hypocritical beliefs and mannerisms play out in others' lives.

Heatchliff, or Iago.

Horatio.

"Sir, my good friend; I'll change that name with you."

Who else would suit this one shady, dark, thoughtful and mad guy?

Yep, me too. Love the bloke. Other than him there would be Owen Meany.

It would have to be God, you know, he's featured in many books, most notably the bible, how awesome would it be to have someone like that as a sidekick. :D

Downside is that just about any adventure will get boring because there won't be any challenge left. Come to think of it, I'd rather not have God as a sidekick.

I'll take Bob as a sidekick instead.

Jorian of Ardamai would be a close second

So did I, jc, but then I thought 'This is a Literature Forum, you can't choose him'.....Then I saw what other people had chosen, so I thought 'Oh, well, Ford Prefect, then, or failing him, Jack Reacher.' Or if we have to have a literary side kick, D'Artagnan would be handy in a dark alley, surrounded by the bad guys.

John Thornton from North and South because reading about his makes me feel all tingly, so having him as a sidekick would be even better. And once you establish a relationship with him, you feel like he'd be loyal and protective and secure forever. Dependable... that's the word I'm looking for. Drat this virus that makes me so blonde!!

Also, Richard Armitage is... well... and the cravat...

I know exactly what you mean. But I fear you would not be able to concentrate. I think I couldn't stop drooling over him.

V from V for Vendetta.

Or Quasimodo from Notre-Dame de Paris. ;)

Sherlock Holmes!!! Duh. Not only could he get me out of sticky situations... not that I get in many ;) but can you imagine? Being serenaded by the violin, remarkable insight into people and situations, pondering over his quirky habits, crime solving adventures! WooHoo!

Raskolnikoff. Or maybe Bilbo Baggins as Gandalf put it that even though hobbits are small creatures, they possess great potential!

Nick and Nora Charles, they're a couple so if I pick one the other would follow anyways, these two would be great fun.

Raskolnikoff.

I second that.

I'd also rather like to have Charles from Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman as a sidekick, because I fancy him rather a lot, and he just isn't meant to be Victorian. Really, no. ;).

Conchis.

Really? Gosh, I think he'd be such an infuriating sidekick! I'd never know whether he was telling the truth, or whether he was going to create some awful drama around me that I wouldn't ever be able to grasp, or whether he was inherently good but confusing or bad and insensitive. In short, he'd destabilise my sanity. I'd kill him after a day or two, I think. ;). Why do you say him?

We cant say to a Raskolnikov chooser, heeey he is a killer!
Well I didnt choose him for his infuriating behaviours in the book. :)
He was the one I can remember while reading here, but again, some of his ideas very fit to mine. Hoping he ll not fooling me. ;)

V from V for Vendetta.

It would bother me that you never get to see his face though. At least The Phantom of the Opera had some braveness on that front.

Exactly! That's also one of the reasons to why I chose him! :D You see his use: he might make it easier to carry out Loike's purpose of disposing off Conchis without Loike having to kill Conchis all by him/herself. :p

Who else but Jeeves from P G Wodehouse. Imagine having him as your butler/ mentor.

If I can't have the cool, suave, elegant Jeeves then:

Captain Grimes from Evelyn Waugh's Decline and Fall: cheerful, always bounces back- a life force.

Mr Scogan from Aldous Huxley's Chrome Yellow or Mr Cardan from Those Barren Leaves: maybe upper class English snobs, but both witty, intelligent, well read and great conversationalists.

Sherlock Homes is a good one, but wasn't he a heroin addict?

Reepacheep from C S Lewis' Narnia books. An English Civil War cavalier mouse in the tradition of the English cavalier poets: brave, loyal, noble and stylish.

Jim from Kingsley Amis' Lucky Jim

What about one of Dickens' larger than life comic characters? Someone like Mr Macawber or Mr Pickwick? Or maybe Scrooge after the conversion- he'd certainly be cheerful and lively!

I'm surprised no females have picked Mr Darcy

I think I'd go for Richard Sharpe (Bernard Cornwell series) as a sidekick. He is the man you'd want around to look out for you. He knows how to handle himself, always does the right thing, is a brave and courageous leader of his men, but is vulnerable with women, (he always falls for the woman involved - hence my choosing him ;)) and I think I could quite happily hang out with him, and the fact that he is played by Sean Bean on screen is an added bonus. I was in love with the character in the books before the tv series started, and I pictured him in my head quite differently, but no matter, Sean's a great Sharpe. :D

The original Dr Who! I have come across many excellent fictional characters in my time - but none were more like me than he was. I would have given anything in this world to have met the late Verity Lambert who developed this series. How she could have such vision to create a character like him when she was only in her early 20s is beyond anything I've ever seen.

I would want Pancho and Henry Chinaski. Pancho would probably save me from going down the dark alley in the first place and if I did go down one, I would want to have a big drunken brawler to help me out.

Let me be Sherlock Holmes' sidekick ultimately,as it would be stimulating to solve obscure case with him.He is intellectual and laudable by being decisive.

I really like the suggestions of Sherlock Holmes, Dobby and Doctor Who(although David Tennant would be my pick by a stretch) but for me, I'd choose Ernest Hemingway as he presented himself in A Moveable Feast. Cheating a little, I know, but it's taking a book's character.
