View Full Version : Niamhs Litnet IBS Friendly Smoothies!

This thread is created for the benifit of people with IBS, or similar illnesses. It is not a game thread, they are actual recipies, I'm just naming them after members of litnet. Smoothies being a great way for us to get certain vitamins due to the breaking down of the insoluble fiber found in the skin of many fruits, which can cause IBS sufferers a lot of pain. They are also very tasty and proves that IBS foods dont have to be bland, but down right tasty!
If you dont suffer from IBS, just replace the Soya Milk with cows milk. :)
I will try to come up with more and more nice recipies. :) So watch this space! :D
So I thought this would be a nice idea for a thread. IBS friendly smoothies, named after members of Litnet! I hope you like what i come up for you guys! So I'm going to start with Nightshade!
The Nightshade
Blueberries
Cherries
Mango
Banana
Actimel Multivitamin
Soya Milk
Apple Juice.
Throw everything into a blender, and blend until smooth. For extra smoothness and tummy soothing, add a tummy fiber like Acacia fiber to the mixture. (its tasteless!)
:D

Great idea! Please do let us know how they taste when/if you actually try them. I don't drink smoothies so won't be testing any, I am afraid.

How are the smoothies International Bank Services-friendly?
Must admit that I haven't got a clue about smoothies either. Still sounds like a good idea. Could try them if I could think where on Earth could I find soy milk. (isn't real milk allowed?)
By the way, are those smoothies laboratory-tested? I mean, don't they explode on contact with skin or anything? I have learned from MacGyver that you can produce an explosive from totally harmless subjects (such as orange juice, nitroglycerin and some third thing) that one might find in ones' home so better safe than sorry.
(I'd better not mention "The Anarchists Cookbook" at all, but I just did.)

you can replace the soya milk with dairy milk no problem as long as you dont have Irritable Bowl Syndrome, or Lactose Intolerance. :D

Do you think they will tasty as well if they're made from regular milk? My family is allergic to soy and won't try anything made with the stuff. I'm mildly allergic too but I love it.

** makes mental note, find blender, but avoid soy puke**

It should be creamier with regular milk, but wont make much of a difference. I only have soya in the recipies because dairy is a trigger for IBS, so therefore Soya is one alternative to milk in smoothies. :)
** makes mental note, find blender, but avoid soy puke**
 Just use milk!!!!

I'll have to try these out on my son, Isaac. He has Crohn's disease which is along the same lines as IBS and dairy is definitely one of his triggers. The Nightshade is probably the best for him because he needs to avoid anything with seeds you can't separate like strawberries and raspberries and the like.

how about this one Idril?
The Papayahed
Papaya (the fruit of course!)
Mango
Banana
Soya Milk
Actimel Multivitamin
Apple Juice
Also if you live near a health food shop that sells some of Heather Von Vorous products, get her Acacia Tummy fiber and add it to the smoothies. It sooths tummy and colon, ease spasms and is great! I even add it to my soya milk in my cereal for breakfest. its brilliant. She is my IBS Guru.

the actimel is a yogart drink, but recent scientific research says that probiotic drinks like Actimels are very good for people with IBS and similar illnesses. Not sure about Crohns Disease though, so you may have to leave that out.

I know we have problems with antibiotics. He's sick a lot because of the treatment, it's a fairly serious immune-suppressant, so he's on antibiotics more often than most people. After a while it starts to kill off the good bacteria along with the bad, completely wrecking havoc with his gut so actually, the probiotics might be a really good idea when he's on meds. I'll have to ask his doctor about that. Thanks for the information.

That is such a cool idea Niamh!! :) And some of them sound VERY worth trying!! :D Luckily when we moved house we got HEAPS of new blendery instruments and things like that, and some of them STILL need testing ;)
And its very considerate of you to think of the people with IBS and lactose intolerance! :) (I too am lactose intolerant, but not severely, thankfully :))

Well the other stuff i mentioned, the Acacia Tummy Fiber is a prebiotic, and they both contain good bacteria that is good for the tummy and the gut. Hope these help!
You can get the Fiber in a shop called United Pantry in Minot. :)
