Okay I'd like to get the opinion of the people of LitNet!! :) At our school we have socials, mostly we have one each term, but it varies. So last year we had our year 10 formal as one thing, which was a river cruise. And this year we are having a dinner-dance thing. But it's fantasy themed!! And everyone is confused as to what "fantasy" is. Is it like elves and pixies, princesses and Snow White etc. or is it sci-fi or WHAT?!?!

So, what do you think we're meant to dress up as for this, or what would you dress up in if you were invited to a "fantasy themed party"?

Humm go as a character from a highly obscure fantasy book, and when people ask you what you are whip out the book and show them

And scifi isnt fantasy- Id ask the organisers, fantasy generally as a rough divison involves magical impossibilities while scifi try and explain what ever is going on with science. So for instance Anne MacCaffery's pern books, started off as fantasy but then she wrote the prequel that explained the exsitance of dragons and all as scientific ans so it slots in with the rest of her books which are generally speaking mostly scifi rather than fatasy.

:D That sounds like a plan!!

Whenever family and friends have talked about it, they've always said that fantasy is "everything and anything".... And there is soooo many sub-genres in fantasy which is getting me all confused :p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_subgenres

So with the theory that fantasy is "anything you can imagine" or "anything and everything"... well then.... you could do ANYTHING (including sci-fi!!)
Even the people on the social comitee couldn't define the "fantasy theme"
