Hi Everybody,

I'm new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Carlos Rodriguez and I hope to make some new friends while on here. I love to read and I am thinking about majoring in English Literature in college. I also love acting, writing, music, art, poetry, psychology and basically life in general. I don't have a favorite author or book because there are many that I like but I do have a few that I really enjoy reading their work such as John Steinbeck, William Somerset Maugham, Charles Dickens and Fyodor Dostoevsky. I'm also a great admirer of the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine, Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Jim Morrison (the late lead singer and lyricist for The Doors has always had a profound effect on me as both a musician and poet).

My taste in movies range from the classics and avant-guarde to a few of the comtemporaries. I especially love the movies from the 60's and 70's, I think these were two of the most influential decades in American cinema. In music again my taste is eclectic. I love classic rock, blues, jazz, soul, classical and some spanish ballads. When it comes to art, I prefer the master impressionists like Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh and Gauguin and the Baroque style artists such Rembrandt, Goya, Caravaggio. I love the paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec and the master of macabre in surrealism Salvador Dali and I'm fond of some of Picasso's later work. Well I think I've talked enough about me for one night. Please feel free to comment or sent me any messages and I will respond as quickly as I can. If there are any English Literature majors on the forum (I'm sure there are some) I would appreciate any advice of if you care to explain about your experience as an Eng Lit major in college just so that I have an idea what I am in for I would greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly to anyone that reads my introductory post and I more than welcome any replies and as I said I will respond just as quickly as I can.

Thanks again and good night,

You sound like a very interesting person.

I live in Atlanta, Ga and I'm a 'Boomer', taught elementary/middle school for many years and encouraged my students to develop their abilities and interests whatever they might be.

Have you been to Atlanta? It is a good place for students and anyone with a progressive outlook. A great deal of interest in all things literary, music, art and just about anything you wish to pursue.

Many fine corporations here, too--such as Coca Cola.

"Have a Coke and a Smile" that always works for me.

Whenever you want to visit Atlanta just let me know and I will tell you 'The Best Places' to eat, visit and enjoy yourself.

Best chili dogs and Frosty Oranges in the world at the Varsity near GA Tech.

:yawnb: Thank you for your kind reply to my introductory message. You were very thoughtful and generous and I appreciated. I've never been in Atlanta but it sounds like a great place from how you described it. How interesting that you taught school, I have a great respect for teachers and although I've had my share of confrontation with a few while in school I think for the most part they do a wonderful job which I feel is vastly underpaid and to some degree underappreciated. How I see it is that education is the key to success which is what I constantly tell my children. An education (in today's world especially) is not only a luxury but a necessity. Is virtually impossible to find a decent, good paying job without one let alone trying to get by and barely surviving.

I've been out of school for a long time and is now that I have decided to go back and finish my degree. You know how it is when you're young for some very foolish reason school usually is at the bottom of your priorities at least it was for me and like a fool that I was I dropped out in my sophomore year of college. During the twenty-years that I was out of school I did pursue to educate myself by reading four hours a day every day. I became enamored with English, American, Spanish and Russian literature and would read voraciously the works of the great authors as well as the poetry of the some of the most celebrated poets of centuries past. I read books, visited museums, listen to classical music, went to the symphony and became active in the theater both as a patron and an actor. Acting has been and continues to be one my greatest passions which is the reason why I am pursuing a double major in English Literature and in Drama. I apologize for the lengthy e-mail but I like to write about as much as I like to read which is a lot. I would guess by having been a teacher (or if you're still teaching) you can understand my love of literature and the arts in general.

Well I believe I have probably bored you to tears so I'll be signing off now and again thank you for your reply and for introducing yourself. You're the only one that responded to my introduction so far and I thank you for doing so. I hope that we can be friends and discuss not only works of literature but life in general or whatever you may be interested in. I'm very flexible and understanding and I can openly talk pretty much about anything.

Blessings,
Carlos

Hello Carlos and welcome to LitNet! :) Sorry about the late post, I'm normally around a lot more and so I'm finally catching up on things around here. :). Reading your introduction really brought me back to my art theory and exam (it was a few weeks ago) as we had just done the Impressionists, the Post-Impressionists and Fauvists!! :p Personally I really like the works of Dufy, especially Tribute To Mozart. But I also do like many of Van Gogh's works, among other artists. :)

Hope to see you around the forums :)
