Always a good place to start.
metaphysical tends to apply to 17th c. poetry. The poets used wit and ingenuity. They also used colloquial speech. These poets used original images and conceits. For example Sir Thomas Wyatt's Petrarch's 134th Sonnet
I find no peace and all my war is done;
I fear and hope, I burne and freeze like ice.
The oxymorons peace and war, fear and hope and burne and freeze are all examples of conceits.
I know this is a bit garbled but I hope it helps.

Metaphysics is ultimately concerned with the nature of reality. Two examples would be the Platonic view in which the ultimate reality consists of Ideal Forms of which physical reality is an imperfect imitation. Aristotle says reality if form embodied in matter. The scientific metaphysics is based on the reality of the physical universe and energy.

Simply put, metaphysics asks the question, "What is real?''
Thank you very much for your help.

John was a metaphysical poet. We see a wonderful amalgamation of juxtaposed things in his verses.
