This Is the Bed
We sleep on
together
not touching
Pillow divides our
separate dreams
Limbs lie askew
but never intertwined
Each our own blankets
-mine as chrysalis
-yours as shroud
When it became this way
but it's always been
separate dreams
-mine as chrysalis
--yours as shroud.

Eff! How sad this is...Of how many marriages, I wonder, is it true? The repetition of the chrysallis/shroud metaphors at the end is a killer.

well, it's true of mine. my husband is a blanket hog and we've each slept with our own set for i don't know how long now. the symbolism in it has occurred to me before but i try not to dwell on it too much. well written Shannon!

I didn't pay enough attention to this before and don't know whether it was a conscious choice on your part but "We sleep on" is tellingly different from "We sleep in" would have been.
But surely "limbs lay" should be "limbs lie" to be consistent with your use of the present tense throughout.

Very well put!!!
My wife considers me "a whirling dervish" in bed!
I consider her a teller of a thousand and one Arabian nights' tales!
goldenrod.

Now THIS is most definitely interesting! ;)
And Ms. Shannon, I get it, I like it. That chrysalis/shroud...mighty powerful.
