Hello - I'm new to the forums and was wondering where I could find a free downloadable ebook for Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin. I don't really mind which format its in as long as its not an audio book. I've searched everywhere, including my library and so far all I can find is the movie format and sample audio book. Much help will be appreciated, thanks.

Can't help you with the e-book I just wanted to comment I am amazed someone has even heard of the book as I was a young teenager when my sister was reading a paperback of it. I would suggest trying e-bay or even amazon.com. I'm amazed if I wait long enough every book I wanted to recollect shows up eventually. I read parts of it and it made an impression on me --hopefully a postive one. Just went myself and checked e-bay--a copy is on sale right now!!

Well actually I'm quite young myself (16) and was recommended reading the book by my English/Literature teacher when we were watching Malcolm X, he's being teaching at school for 20 years and it use to be of his favorite novels back in the day. Seeing as I'm only young, can't really use Ebay with my parents being quite suspicious of the internet yet alone undergoing any purchases on it so yeah, that rules out buying the book, hmm. I'm passionate about a few thing's and racism certainly comes under that list so I'm quite insistent on reading it. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, thanks anyway!

Another book you would probably find very interesting is James Weldon Johnson's "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man". It tells the story of a light-skinned Black man who must choose whether to accept his African-American ancestry and culture, or to "pass" for a white man. Despite the title, this book is actually a novel written in 1912.
Another, more recent, take on this subject is Philip Roth's novel "The Human Stain". I won't get into any details about the plot so as not to spoil some of the twists and turns of the story.

A very good book. When I read it, I started at 10pm one night and finished at 7am the next day, having read it overnight because I couldn't stop reading to sleep.
I have been trying to find a place you can download an ebook, but so far I've come up with nothing. I really doubt you'll get it for free, as it is still in copyright and policing of such things has become rather strict. If you haven't already, ask about Inter-Library Loan at your library; otherwise, you may have to fork over some cash for this book, which is, I would point out, certainly worth it. If Ebay is out, you might be able to persuade your parents to use Amazon by telling them "it's for school".

I guess it can't be found as an ebook so I'll try buying it at amazon with the 'for school' line hehe. I'll try borrowing those books from my local library EricP seeing as they are more recent and sound pretty interesting and similiar to the themes of Black like me (racism obviously, oppression ect). Thanks for you recommendations and help guys :)
