Okay folks, the title is pretty much self explanatory: Post pictures of your idols, the people that amaze you. Whether they're well known, or just family/friends - post them here and state why you think they're so amazing :)

Slavoj Žižek -- Žižek is a Lacanian-Marxist philosopher from Slovenia. I find his synthesis of Marx and Lacan to be the most constructive method to interpret and explain contemporary society and culture. His humorous style and sometimes jarring juxtapositions (e.g., international toilets and political ideologies, Groucho Marx and the Freudian superego) keep the reader on his/her toes! Every time I read one of his books or articles, I feel like I must change my way of thinking about the world slightly. I definitely recommend his works to all interested in philosophy and/or psychoanalysis!

I just recently saw The Pervert's Guide to Cinema,it was really interesting. Žižek is a typical post-modern philosopher, but he can actually make sense, which is more than can be said about most of them these days,IMO.
Oh,and, not to forget about my idol:

Andy Warhol - Utter genius!
Personally I think he was a rather pathetic wannabe... certainly far more concerned with celebrity than with art. I'd almost be tempted to call him one of the most destructive figures in the history of Modern art... but that would be giving him far too much credit. Duchamp... who probably was a genius (a term one would never think of applying to Warhol after having read just the smallest bits of his journals) probably deserves that title... but Warhol popularized some of the concepts that Duchamp first threw out there and in the process reduced art to something akin to the fashion industry or Hallmark cards. I find it absolutely hysterical (in an absurd way) that France has museums devoted to the work of Picasso, Rodin, Monet, Matisse, etc... Holand has the Van Gogh Museum... Britain has the Turner... and the United States...?! The great Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh!!!

Maybe it's just because the United States hasn't been around as long as these other nations, and we haven't had time to cultivate and refine our collective tastes and sensibilities. Or not.
Or, maybe Warhol's art is a reflection of life in the United States. Think about this last election. I'm only going to use the election to illustrate my point, and I'm not going to get too detailed, so I hope that will be okay as far as forum rules go. I was watching the news the other day and they showed a snippet of Bono speaking about the election, and he said that no matter who won the race, this new administration had the opportunity to repackage and market "Brand USA" to the rest of the world. Instead of just saying that the US could rebuild its reputation, he said "Brand USA." I thought that was an interesting phrase to use.
Many of Warhol's pieces were repetitive silk screens. They all had a similar look, the same colors were seen again and again and, his subjects were household namebrand items you would have seen advertised at the time. Or his subjects were pop culture figures that would have been on television when those advertisements were run. An image would be repeated within a piece with variations on color - the colors used were the same, but each image varied with the color placement. In my opinion, he captured US pop/consumer/culture in those repetivie silk screens of uninteresting everyday items, and if art can be defined as a reflection of life, then it's okay that Andy Warhol's work is displayed in a museum. Maybe the USA only has Andy Warhol b/c Andy Warhol's art encapsulates what the US was becoming then. Did Andy Warhol reduce art to an industry akin to Hallmark as you said, or did his pieces depict components of a huge emerging pop culture/consumer industry?
Maybe they did. Or, maybe he was just some no-talent who got more exposure than he deserved. Or none of the above. I might not be making any sense at all. I haven't slept.
Oh yeah, this thread is supposed to be about my idols. I'm supposed to post a picture of my idol: my idol is in my avatar.

The one and only Mel Brooks (quite possibly the funniest man to ever walk the earth) reminding us that it is, in fact, "good to be the king"
