Bah, I have missed far too much of this tournament. I need a job that lets me have the summers off to watch every sporting event I want.

I see another year of failure for Spain. Not sure if the Dutch can keep it going for the entire tournament. Germany are strong as always (love podolski - great player, perfect foil for Klose, also Lahm who may be the best fullback in the game at the moment - he has assumed the mantle of Lizarazu for Bayren very well)

With regards to teams with players I was unfamiliar with: I was very impressed with the Swiss, and the way they played with Barnetta & Behrami. It is refreshing to see a team play with real wingers in a centre dominated era. If they had a top class striker they could have progressed - btw Frei is not top class, his injury doesnt count....

Germany hasn't been playing impressively in this tournament so far but they have been getting the job done... in the great German style!

I see Italy made the quarter finals. Maybe they're getting their act together. If they can just beat Spain, watch out. They can take it all. :D

A friend of mine in Lit today was talking about the Euro 2008, and how disappointed she is in England (she used to live there). There's only 6 people in our class and 4 of us had no idea what she was on about, having no knowledge of the Euro 2008.... :p

Turkey did it again! However, I don't think they have a chance against Germany...

This has been one of the best tournaments ever! All the teams in the semi-finals are outsiders!

Germany v Turkey - 9 of Turkey's players will be missing the game so they don't have a chance in front of efficient Germany.

Russia v Spain - Even though Russia seems to have improved a lot recently, I think Spain might steal the show.

Now I am rooting for Spain...

Scheherazade

Any predictions on Germany v Turkey?

I am expecting 5 goals from Germany...

Are they going to let the third Turkish goalie play midfield by the way?

I'd love it if Germany won this year!!! :D

But I have a feeling that it will be Russia and I can't say why that is....

Well, speaking as an overpatient person, i dont want Turkey to win one more time because i m very sick of the media, they really working like a nationalism factory. It became a madness, and very annoying.
On the other hand, because of their immoral behaviour on last game i dont want Germany win either.
Confused. :)

me too! and I haven't even watched a single match yet (...exams)

I'll watch Germany vs Turkey tonight, though. whatever the outcome, there will be lots of motorcades and noise here, seeing as the Turks are the largest minority in Germany.
Lots of Turks in Berlin have got both the German and the Turkish flag on their cars :)

What a game that was! Turkey did their best despite not having 9 of their major players... but they also made mistakes and Germany did not overlook those.

Good luck to Germany in the finals!

Any bets on Russia v Spain? I want Spain to win but, like Sleepy and Vheissu, have a feeling that it might be Russia.

On a show in my country there was this woman who said she could predict the future. She said that Germany would win against Turkey and that Russia will win euro 2008. So far, she's been right with her first prediction. I'm curious to see if she will be right with the next one.

But I'm rooting for Spain, regardless. Too bad Holland and Portugal have left.

Actually, Germany has a lot of chances to win. The verdict will be on Sunday evening, we'll see if Russia wins or Germany.Altough, Russia could not go to the final if Spain wins the semi -finale tomorrow.

I voted for Spain because I want them to win, but sadly, I think it's going to be Russia. I say "sadly" and I'm Russian! LOL I just like Spain.

LOL Don't worry, i wasn't rooting for my country either. Spain played really well tonight. I hope they win. I never liked Germany, don't know why....

It has been an interesting tournament with some of the less expected teams making it into the quarter finals. I enjoyed it very much and am now looking forward to World 2010 (the matches are starting in September, right?)

Well the qualifying in some regions have already started (South America, Asia & I believe CONCACAF as well). The majority of the Euro qualifying starts in September, with the exception of Kazakhstan vs Andorra in August. The 2 most important games in the qualifying are

28th March '09: netherlands (boo hiss;) ) vs SCOTLAND

&

9th September '09 SCOTLAND vs netherlands

Nice goals, kilted, and good luck to your team!

But there's one thing that intrigues me, and I'd like to ask a question which I'm aware may sound outrageous to Scottish (or Welsh/Irish/English) people: Why is it that the UK - which is a nation, isn't it? - has four national teams? None of these was in the EURO 2008. Wouldn't the UK be perhaps more successful if they chose the best players from these four teams? I know there's such a thing as history and tradition, but isn't it time to stand as one?
It's as if in Germany, say, Bavaria and Saxonia wanted their own national team.

That reminds me of an article I read a few days ago. It said that in Spain Catalonians and Basques demanded their own national team. There was no public viewing of the final in Barcelona and Bilbao because people there refuse to support the Spanish team. I think that's sad.

.

Firstly thank you.

The obvious answer to the why no UK team is clearly that if England didnt get to field their own team, there wouldnt be any English players:p , wouldnt want to upset them so they get to keep their own team to shut them up.

Ok, serious answer now. there are 4 teams because there are four distinct countries (just united under the reign of one monarch), with 4 different national football associations and leagues. If we ever did go to a combined British league (which we all know Rangers would win every year) we would probably be forced to have a combined national team as well. Another reason is the historical throwback to the first internationals played being between the "home" nations.

I suppose if Bavaria, Saxony, Catalunya & the Basques seperated into independent football associations and leagues they could get their own national teams also...
