Hi everyone, I’m in the 10th grade and we had been working on Romeo and Juliet this year and for our final exam we have been assigned to write an essay, with the choice of one of the following topics:
1. The lovers are doomed by their own impulsive decisions
2. The tragedy of the play stems from the irresponsible actions of the parents and parent substitutes in Romeo and Juliet’s lives

I’m really having trouble thinking about what I am going to write, If anyone here has any input on any ideas or anything I could use to form my essay that would really be helpful. This is a final exam and it is worth a lot (30%) of my final mark so any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I could try to point you in the right direction.

If you are doing the first options, look carefully at the following scenes:

Act I Scene V (the meeting)
Act II Scene II (balcony scene)
Act II Scene III (Romeo's coversation with Friar Laurence)
Juliet's conversation with the Friar (don't remember the scene)
Juliet drinks the poison
and
The death scene............all of the these lead to that argument that R&J's actions are irrational.

Pay attention to the way they speak and to any rationale they give for their actions (though there's not much)

Hope that helps
