Alright so I am currently working on a short story that is so far around 4500 words in length and will probably be finished around 8000 words in length. Now, by comparison, the majority of short stories on here seem extremely short and so I'm wondering if I should feel discouraged at all by this. Is an 8000 word short story simply far too long?

Edit: I believe this thread is probably in the wrong category so I apologize. I literally just joined.

Yes, I would consider 8,000 words to be quite meaty for a short story. I myself posted "The Xian'Juo", which is pretty long and clocks in at 4,500 words (roughly). If your story is going to be that long, try to bulk it up a bit and make it a novelette instead. I have two novelettes already (not on this forum), wich are roughly 15,000 words long each. Or, you could scale this 8,000 word story to make it shorter. Your call.

Since it's going to be longer than a short story, I would suggest putting it into the GENERAL WRITING section. You can break it up into digestible-size episodes or chapters, so it doesn't overwhelm the readers with its size. They can then read the pieces at their leisure.

I've tried that approach for several stories, and nobody's complained yet.
