This thread is superb! I can't wait to come up with some pictures for it and have enjoyed all I have just viewed. I love this thread - great idea OswaldTheOsprey. I have been thinking of starting a similiar thread myself - with illustrators of famous books/novels/children's stories. Now this is just the incentive I needed to do so.

Hi Shallot, I was going to make up a new thread with illustrations from classics; either children's books or novels. I love that painting; I adore the Pre-Raphaelites. It would be nice in my new thread. I thought this thread was just for author photos portraits and paintings, but I see that someone else posted an archway that is beautifully painted.

Maybe, you can post this lovely painting in my new thread, also. I will try and make that up tomorrow or next day. I have some great ideas for it and artwork.

The Aboriginal Cricketer by Les Murray
Mid-19th century

Good-looking young man
in your Crimean shirt
with your willow shield
up, as if to face spears,

you're inside their men's Law,
one church they do obey;
they'll remember you were here.
Keep fending off their casts.

Don't come out of character.
Like you they suspect
idiosyncrasy of witchcraft.
Above all, don't get out

too easily, and have to leave here
where all missiles are just leather
and come from one direction.
Keep it noble. Keep it light.

Oswald, you find the greatest b/w photos - where are you findind all these; humm? can't give away your secret, no doubt.:lol:

I do think we need some 'ladies' in here. Kind of heavy on the men authors so far. I will have to dig up some female novelists for this thread. I don't have the time presently, but I wanted to pop in here and tell you that you are doing a great job on this thread! Keep it moving along.....

I am so enjoying these great photos and seeing authors I had no idea what they looked like. The closeups are wonderful!

Thanks, Janine. I get them from various websites. You are so right in re "ladies" and I will do my part!

Thanks OswaldTO, that would be great if you found more ladies. I thought of some more but haven't had the time to look them up or track down nice photos. You always seem to find the best one and large to copy.

Very cool photo of Kay Boyle.

Anti, I agee about that old typewriter; if I had to type on that nachine, I would be doing one post a day! I actually do own an old Underwood - just for looks. It is not easy to type on; one needs strong figure muscles!

Not at all. There are ones I am not familiar with. In the last post, Heinlein, DeCamp and Asimov were all science fiction writers.

Scheherazade, I know what you mean. I was browsing through this thread last night, to see what was new, and I thought the same exact thing. I am glad to hear that even OswaldTheOsprey, did not know of some of the entries. I just thought - I must be really uninformed; glad I am not alone. Of course, the photos are still quite interesting. I love to see the old clothes and styles.

The forum is an opportunity to learn more, know new names, new books and discuss matters.
If someone does not know any of the names I suggested, visit the thread Brazilian Literature, here in this very forum:

Synopsis of Machado's stories, History of Portuguese Language, Art Pictures:

Camões and Fernando Pessoa are very important Portuguese writers.
José Saramago is Portuguese too, he has a Nobel.

Machado de Assis and Carlos Drummond are Brazilians. Clarice Lispector was born in Ukrainia, but she is also Brazilian.
All of them are amazing!

Smooth away trouble; and the rough male kiss

Shining and free; blue-massing clouds; the keen
Unpassioned beauty of a great machine;
