Essay on The Things They Carried

Okay, I have to write an essay on the novel The Things They Carried. But, the part that I don't understand is as follows:
...but must be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point font, and 1 1/2 spaced.
I don't know what the meaning of 1 1/2 spaced is in terms of typing on computer. Can anyone tell me what this means? And, please give me example (at least short) on how the sentences will look like on screen.

It is a formatting protocol for typed documents which some people prefer as it provides more space to add comments between lines. I want to say APA standard calls for double spacing but I may be wrong there.

If you are using MS Word you can get the program to do it for you automatically by following these steps:

1) click on Format drop menu
2) click on paragraph
3) click on the line spcing menu bar and select 1.5 lines.
