What the hell!

I just finnised reading Good Morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys and thought I cannot truly say that I did not like it, the first thought that came into my mind was "What the hell!"

I have no idea what that book was about. I could not even tell what was happening, what was only being imagined to happen, what was past, and what was present.

And what I thought the book was about, dosen't match what the discription on the back of the book says it is suppose to be about.

Interesting, I just picked this book up from the library after reading 'Wide Sargasso Sea' and finding that 'Good Morning, Midnight' is allegedly about Ms. Rhys' "young buck" days (& nights) in Paris.

I haven't read it yet, Dark Muse, but I'll come back to this thread once I get into it.

I experienced your same dilemma with Wide Sargasso Sea, actually. Since no one I know really shares my reading list, I enjoy browsing this forum or Amazon.com reviews to learn what other people think of certain books. I found that many peoples' interpretations of WSS were different than my own, but in the sense where I felt I missed a lot.

I think Rhys has a very unique style, involving heavy imagery and implications, and one really must keep on one's toes when reading her.

She was also greatly emotionally/mentally afflicted, though brilliant - is the general concensus - so much of her writing must be written off of various emotive states, and meant to convey those states. I suppose what I mean by that is her "form" is indicative of the troubled or disturbed mindsets of her protagonists.

I want to read Wide Sargasso Sea.

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this one when you do read it. I read it for class, and than when they were talking about the book, it was like everyone in class, got something that I totaally to did not out of the book, and I felt like I somehow completely misinterepeted it. I read something completely different into it.
