The Watery Graveyard

Standing on the shore of the ocean so vast,
Gazing out on the blue bowl of the earth—
Out over the graveyard of ships that were past,
One contemplates one’s position and worth.
There are graves on the shore of sailors lost
When their ship went down, sank by the enemy.
Brave souls that paid the ultimate cost,
At rest now in their final beds by the sea.
Out there is a smoke stack still upright on a ship
The last resting place for a boat and its crew.
On the beach buried in sand is a boiler that slipped,
When the torpedo struck the boat and it blew.
Visiting the place where Blackbeard went down—
So many shades of people seem to shadow the town…

I love the sea and all its mystery. Smoogles cemetery writing assignment and now your watery graveyard. Was this from your recent vacation? Very nice. I can imagine you standing there looking out to sea.

Thanks one and all! Yes, Amp, from my vacation. The ocean just off Hatteras is known as "The Graveyard of the Atlantic." At any given point there are a good 50 shipwrecks off shore; the ocean floor is littered with ship parts. They wash up on shore from time to time. I've seen them. Makes you think and feel small. There are two British cemeteries out there where British citizens are buried in land on permanent loan to Britain. Blackbeard was destroyed just off Ocracoke. The land is awash in the ghosts of sailors past! :)
