In need of help.

Hi, im looking for a book. I hope this is the right place to post.
I apologise if it is not.

I don't know much about this book, no authors name, no title no dates.
So basicaly im searching with only the facts that I can remember about the book in question! I am that desperate to find out what it is!

Here is all I know...

It starts off with a boy looking through his window at snowflakes falling.
He may or may not follow a fox into the woods.
There is a Doctor or Professor and a girl in the story too.
There is a metal tiger or leopard with syringes for teeth.
They boy has emerald eyes.
A monster apears sometime in the story, he is realy tall, human shaped and may or may not be constantly grinning.
He has a bag that can hold anything.
He stuffs the Doctor/Professor into the bag and wanders around in the snow searching for something.
The colour green has major significance.
The Doctor/Professor gives the boy a snuff box.
I also remember the characters covered in some kind of soot-like substance.

I know this is basicaly falling in the dark, but any help would be appreciated.
I realy need to find out more about this book. You know when something sits in your mind and won't leave you alone?

Any clue about the date the book was written or the nationality of the author, or even when you read it would probably help. It is certainly not anything I can remember reading.

I cannot help here, but I also need some. Some Spanish friend told me once she read a book, a very good one, she said. I do not remember the title. It was something like "When Turks Discovered America". Any thought about it, please? Thanks!
