Hello :yawnb:
I have been reading through your forums and have found it very helpful and informative so let me start off by saying thank you to the person or group that kick started these forums! However reading all the information and gathering I am still unable to get a satisfactory answer to my particular question or statement.

My option/questions states:
"Is Winston a hero? Discuss your opinion" - 700-1,000 words

I would like to hear your say on these two statements, which side would you take and thus help me in further understanding this book :D :D

Thanking You

Interesting question.

Technically, I don't think Winston qualifies as a "traditional" hero - he fails completely - however, I think he can be classed as heroic for even trying to go against the Party. I'm sure Orwell intended W to be the hero by:

W rebelling right from the start of 1984.

His attempt to join the revolution against the Party. (incorrectly as it turns out)

His desire to see the proles arise and fight against the Party.

His admission (and Julia's) that he would kill or maim to serve the revolution.

You could certainly take an opposing view, simply becasue a traditionally ehroic character would have exposed the Party lies and started a revolution, while all W achieves is his own re-programming.

Winston is the hero in the literary sense. He is the main character and protagonist. The fact that winston fails is what makes it a tragedy. In a comedy, the hero gets hitched and succeeds. In a tragedy, the hero dies. That is the classic definition but the hero doesnt need to actually die. Just fail. And winstons spirit was killed.

So i believe winston was absolutely the hero. Maybe not the skewed modern definition of it. But he is the literary hero.

also the criteria im working towards requires me to use quotes and other evidence of thorough research, so I was wondering what could be couple of quotes that would back up my thesis statement saying Winston is a hero in his own way?

I have highlighted a few but personally I have my own concerns and doubts about them

So far, so good!

I'll try to come back with some passages highlighting what you're after.
