my fear danik is that one or more of the cats running around, like spritzer did, is going to have five kittens under my house. one of my neighbors believes its another one of our neighbors who is bringing the cats around. there have been a couple different ones at my house in the past few weeks. while I think she is "animal irresponsible" to a large degree, the cats do have lots of places there to find shelter.

It was your turn, that´s why no one posted.

Yes, you may going to have a problem there. Maybe you should write to a cat shelter or ngo near you to ask them what to do. You like cats but you aren´t in a condition to house and feed Bounty´s thriving cat community. To talk to the neighbour wouldn´t be a good idea I think.

one of her kids just knocked on my door asking to borrow a shovel. as soon as I returned inside the house I realized I could have asked him if his mother has recently brought some new cats around. I think we might have talked about this before danik---I saw a cat with a kitten in the nearby brush one day quite awhile ago, and enquired to the local animal shelter to do something about them, and also to have a talk with my neighbor about her outdoor male cat who's probably doing the impregnating, and they wouldn't do it.

there are a few barns and sheds and stalls and what not around, so some shelter is not too much of a problem, but getting food has to be tough for any homeless cats around.

If the shelter people won´t help there is only one solution if more cats appear: to close the shelter under your house so that they can´t get into it. I suppose they will disappear anyway as soon as the weather gets warmer.

I read Lady Chatterly´s Lover but for current times, there isn´t anything shocking there.

I went back out yesterday and asked one of the kids if they've been getting more cats. he said something like "yeah we have a lot of cats." I don't know why they come down to my house at all actually. it cant be just for shelter. its a mystery. now that im thinking about it, im pretty confident that my homeless cat spritzer originally came from them.

You can try finding out how many cats are there. They may be out for food. But I don´t see what you can do about it unless the cats are actually starving. By calling the shelter you may solve your cat problem but create a neighbor problem, specially if there are men in the house. And shelter cats get killed if they are not adopted.

Oh, I only remember some garden scenes were Lady Chatterly and her lover exposed much more than an ankle. But I don´t think they met in public. Lady C´s husband was an invalide and the lover was the gardener.

there are at least two new cats ive noticed, on top of two they already have. so far as it goes, the shelter here is a no kill shelter, which I think is good. I don't think they are starving but I do bet they are hungry. the one that got spritzer pregnant last year was here much every day eating the food I put out for her. I started putting out food for him too thinking he was also homeless, until I figured out he belonged to my neighbor.

don't get me started on the goats, pigs, horses, dogs, ducks, chickens, cow, music that's too loud, kids in my yard, junk vehicles parked by the road, denuded trees, spots of wrecked fence, and garbage.

ohhh, I don't like that lady chatterly cheated on her husband!

I think I read portrait of a lady. I suspect that's another book that has a gendered appeal to it. I would have read it because its a classic and I was supposed to, and its good for me, so to speak.

I kept them in my house for a large handful of weeks until they were old enough to move on. then i took them to a way too busy cat rescue place about a 100 miles away and left a large donation to help defray the cost of their shots and spaying/neutering. while they were waiting for that, they were to be fostered by a local family. i tried communicating with the place about who was specifically fostering them because i wanted to help support the effort financially, but they didnt tell me after the first time i asked, and didnt respond to me at all after the second time i asked. i had named them---sprite, fluffy, cubby, alice and harriet, and i felt like a monster and cried like heck when i gave them away.

Bounty, I am quite sure that these so well cared for kittens soon found new homes. About the attitude of the shelter, I think that many of the people that bring cats to a shelter do it with a heavy heart, because they cannot keep them. And they want to help and know if they have got a new home. If the shelter people were nicer they would have a lot of extra work speaking with all the people. I fully understand, that you don't want to live that experience again.

BLACK FOREST CHERRY CAKE

A retro classic, Black Forest Cherry Cake or Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is as delicious today as ever. A tower of chocolate, cream, cherries… what could be better?

4.7 Stars (9 Reviews)

INGREDIENTS
FOR THE CHOCOLATE SPONGE:
3 medium eggs, room temperature
125 g (½ cup) sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
75 ml (5 Tbsp) neutral oil
75 g (½ cup) plain flour
50 g (½ cup) cocoa (unsweetened, Dutch-processed)
1 ½ tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
2 Tbsp sugar, extra
butter to grease the pan

FOR THE FILLING:
680g (24 oz.) jar sour cherries, (reserve the cherry juice)
2 Tbsp cornflour/cornstarch
25g (2 Tbsp) sugar
2 sheets gold strength gelatine
500ml (2 cups) cream
3 Tbsp Kirsch or rum
150g (5.5 oz.) dark chocolate
fresh dark cherries, to decorate

INSTRUCTIONS

PREPARE: Heat oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas 4. Line the base of a 20cm round springform cake tin with baking paper and grease the base and sides well with butter.
BEAT THE EGGS: Using an electric mixer with the paddle attachment fitted beat eggs, sugar and vanilla together until light and fluffy, around 5 minutes, then drizzle in the oil, beating continuously until incorporated.
MIX DRY INGREDIENTS: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt. Gently, but thoroughly fold the dry ingredients into the beaten egg mixture, ensuring it is well combined but keeping as much air in the mixture as possible.
BAKE: Pour into the prepared cake tin, then bake in the middle of the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until risen and the cake has begun to pull away from the sides of the tin. Take care not to walk around in front of the oven too much while the cake is cooking, sponges are very fragile and can collapse.
COOL: Remove the cake from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes. Line a rack with baking paper and invert the cake on top, remove the tin and allow to cool completely before peeling off the top paper.
MAKE THE CHERRY COMPOTE: Drain the cherries and reserve 150ml of the juice. Mix 2 tablespoons of the juice with the cornflour/cornstarch in a small bowl until smooth. Heat the cherries with the sugar in a small saucepan, stir through the cornflour/cornstarch mixture and cook gently until thickened. Set aside to cool.
WHIP CREAM: Place the gelatine sheets in a shallow dish, pour over enough cold water to cover and allow to soften for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes squeeze out as much liquid as you can, then place the gelatine in a small saucepan with 3 Tbsp of the cream and heat very gently, stirring until the gelatine has dissolved. Meanwhile, use an electric mixer to whip the cream until stiff.
MIX CREAM: When the gelatine has dissolved, remove from the heat ad allow to cool slightly. Add two big spoonfuls of the whipped cream to the gelatine and stir to combine, then add the mixture back to the whipped cream, folding through, gently but thoroughly. Transfer ¼ of the cream to a piping bag with a star nozzle fitted and chill.
CUT CAKE: Use a long, serrated knife to carefully cut the cake horizontally into three layers. Place the bottom layer on a serving plate or stand, sprinkle over 1 tablespoon of the kirsch or rum, then top with half of the cherries and a layer of cream. Repeat with the next layer, then place the third layer on top. Sprinkle with the remaining kirsch or rum.
ADD CREAM TO CAKE: Spoon a layer of cream on the top of the cake and spread a thin layer of cream over the sides. Pipe tufts of cream evenly around the top of the cake and decorate with the fresh cherries.
DECORATE CAKE: Use a knife or peeler to shave the chocolate and make chocolate curls, then press them over the sides and in the middle of the cake. Chill until ready to eat.
