Runes

I walked the shore, the runes were cast
and the stones displayed their call.
My warrior's sword with blade inscribed
lay where the bravest would fall.

The edge shone bright in noonday sun
I reached out to touch the grip,
but it melted beneath my fingers,
my hand disappeared in the hilt.

For the sword was not of this world,
its steel not made for this fight.
It only foretold of tragedies
to come in the dark of the night.

And my warrior was far distant
in a land without moon nor sun,
and his sword, as always, with him,
and his battle not yet begun.

I closed my eyes and cast again,
afraid, yet sure I would see
that the truth given here on this shore
meant none would find release.

The runes shone again, the story was told,
and I knew he was lost to me now.
His sacrifice was mine, as well as his,
but his soul free once and for all.

Knowing as I do some of the background to this enhances my appreciation of how steady, strong and graceful this is!

Jer, thank you. There are a couple of awkward lines I'm not entirely happy with, but overall, yes, it's what I needed to say.
