This Guardian survey (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2007/aug/10/books.booksnews) describes Wuthering Heights as the greatest love story. I thought it would be Dr Zhivago, but there you go! Wrong as always! Should I read Bronte's book? Is it really the greatest of the love stories? All comments are welcome!

Well...I hate that book so yeah I think they got it wrong..lol
I don't have a favorite love story (I don't read that many romantic stories anyways), but I think A Walk To Remember was pretty good.

It is an alright book, though I believe it's over rated. I couldn't say another book to take the place of the greatest Love Stories though as I hardly ever read anything to do with 'love' :p

It's not my favorite - but neither is the style it's written in. I liked Pride and Prejudice more, but I still don't think that's the greatest love story.

I would agree that yes, Wuthering Heights the greatest love story ever written and certainly the most passionate.
Somehow, I knew you'd agree Anti. ;)

You've seen Virgil and I talking about what a truly great book Wuthering Heights is.
Actually, I've seen everybody saying how a great book it is, that I doubted myself..lol...I think I'm gonna re-read it..maybe I missed something :D
Funny, I don't even think it a love story at all. Either way, the best one is clearly, in my mind at least, in the English language, Pride and Prejudice. It simply dominates everything that came after it in that mode.
Romeo should not be 3rd, in my opinion, because other works by Shakespeare prove better love stories, such as The Winter's Tale, As You Like It, and Antony and Cleopatra.
edit: just realized this wasn't an English only poll, just an ethnocentric one. My vote must now go to Nana... Just kidding, nah, it should probably go to Faust.
Second edit: what kind of a sample data is 2000 readers? That really accounts for the whole population... What a cheapskate study. The observations after are just pitiful. also, it should be noted, that being that there does not seem to be a short-list, and that people could only name one, the list has an over simplistic bias, not accurately representing anything. The people who did not vote for Wuthering heights could easily hate it beyond belief, and would be like me and not even consider it a love story.

I've just checked the list now..lol
But yeah, I think Pride and Prejudice should have been at the top of the list.
And Wuthering Heights is?

After thinking about it I have to go with Wuthering Heights myself. Others that might come close: The Great Gatsby, Lady Chatterly's Lover, and a more recent novel The Lover by Marguritte Duras, a French writer. You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L'Amant.
I've been trying to get this in the book forum reads for the longest time.

Over Mother's Day weekend, I watched the 1980's film adaptation of Blue Lagoon. Despite the corny dialogue, flawed logic, and improbability of the story, I liked it so much that I googled it and discovered that the novel could be read in full length on this very site, so I did. That's how I became a member.
The idea of discovering life with a sole companion highly appeals to me because I sort of... hate everybody. Well, I really don't, er, it's hard to explain...
Anyway, Lagoon is now among of my favorite novels, and in my opinion it's not only the greatest love story, but one of the greatest stories of all time.

Taxi Driver,
the screenplay might not be a dostoevsky (in that theres no dept or analyzing of things), but its a great story.
its my favorite movie aswell.

I have the DVD of "The Lover," Virgil. It's quite good, I think. I've never read the book, but I'd like to.
I think you would like it Anti.

meh... I read it awhile ago and I actually like that kind of book, but honestly, it is not the greatest love story of all time. To be honest with you, I'm not sure it's even that much of a love story. I always thought it was more about Heathcliff and how awful a guy he is. Now, you could explain away all his later actions as simply a byproduct of heart-stricken remorse, but I find that really hard to believe. True love doesn't swing that way, I say...
