View Full Version : How are litnetters at driving?

Ok, so I got pulled over today, for the first time. I was doing 48 in a 35 zone. I feel so stupid. I was so freaked out, I was shaking like a leaf. And I was in someone else's car (not stolen ;) ) so I couldn't find the car registration. I was a mess. Oh well, it turned out ok, he let me off. No ticket, woohoo for that. I know I'm not that great of a driver, but I usually stay with 10 mph of the speed limit.
So anyway, how are you guys at driving? Too fast? Too slow? Any tickets?

 You've got to be more carefull W. I bet you batted your female eyes at him and he just melted and decided not to give you the ticket. :p In the 25 years or so as a driver I've only gotten a couple (maybe three) of tickets. I don't usually drive fast, unless there is something urgent. The last one I got was about six months ago. The highway was backed up almost to a standstill, and I needed to get off the next exit. So I drove on the shoulder for about 50 yards and there at the end was a cop just waiting for someone to do that. Bastard.

If you are talking about games such as Need for Speed or GTA Vice City or any racing games, then I think I drive quite well. Much better than I have seen many people driving, while playing these games. Now if you talk about these bigger, less-virtual, more real cars, then I have got my opinion reserved for them until I learn to drive them. :p

*edit to add*

Before that, I want to re-learn how to drive (control) cycle....have got so out of touch from it. Seems like ages since I list rode on it....virtually (in games) as well as on the roads in the area I dwell.

Well, I must boast that I am a great driver!
I got my license 2003, and the year after I bought my first car! I've never gotten a ticket, yet, [thank God!].

I never got a ticket. I am just a paragon of good driving :D
It might have something to do with the speed cameras only able to register up to a certain speed. My UFO is way faster than the fasted cop too. And there are the license plates are registered on Mars, not Earth. :)

How many people can say they got a ticket for going thru a green light ? Oh wait a minute, I did!!! Yep thats right. I made a right turn on a green light and got pulled over. The officer asked me do I know why I got pulled over. I said no. He said put your right blinker on. I did. He then said you were pulled over because you didn't have your blinker on. He then proceeded to give me a ticket and told me I can fight it in court.
I don't care what anyone says but I truly believe cops have a quota that they need to fill at the end of every month and when I got mine it was the end of the month. That has been the only ticket I ever got in my 30+ years of driving.

I never got any ticket, but I've not been driving for many years. I like driving but not downtown because I'm always scared of making a mistake with all those narrow streets...

Oh, in France there are policemen whose job is actually to arrest...the good drivers!! They arrest the drivers who make no errors and they reward them with 100 euros!

Green light? Is it forbidden in some countries? Poor poor. ;)
I think % 70 or more of tickets in my area given because of wrong parking.

Anyway this quota gossip always said in my country too. And statistically, it may be true.

How does that work Sweets? How do they know someone is a good driver? People with good driving records have cheaper insurance in the US. But you build up to that record.

I have yet to get a ticket. ***fingers crossed that I never will*** I know that I am a pretty good driver. I am very cautious and very aware of what is going on around me. I do admit that I tend to drive over the speed limit (only about 5 mph, though). There are those times when I have gone 10, but few and far between. There was generally a reason for that, and I would only do this is an area where I know the police wouldn't be. That is a rare situation for me to be in. It would be on the highway. I always use my turn signal. Maybe because people who don't use it just annoy me and I want to make sure that I do the right thing. ;) Still, I know that I am (for the most part - ignoring the speed thing :) ) a good driver and I am very proud to boast about it! :D

I'm scared to even learn driving  the streets here in Cairo are impossible to drive in. I'm daily stuck in traffic for 30-45 minutes. I can't imagine being the driver though, cuz at least when I'm the passenger I get to read or anything...but being the driver I'll end up dead in my seat.

It is only in one region of France actually, and I saw that apparently it was only last summer that they did so. They only had a limited amount of money to offer and they followed drivers by chance and if the driver did not do anything wrong for 20 minutes and if his/her car was in good state, he/she received the reward. So really, this is not absolutely fair because the driver could make a mistake just after the 20 minutes, but that was just symbolic, you see? Nothing really scientific about measuring who's a good driver. :D :p

EDIT: about fines, you should ask Prince, he's an expert in that, he gets a ticket almost everyday!

I remember one time when my husband and I were on vacation and we were driving along and all of a sudden we get pulled over. I can't remember where we were but I thought "oh S--T!!. The cop then asked my husband for his drivers license. When the cop realized where my husband was from, he started asking about the old neighborhood and luckily we got off with only a warning. Good old New York saved us that day from getting a ticket.

So anyway, how are you guys at driving?
Too fast? Too slow? Any tickets?
How is my driving? Reasonably good, considering my very low mile per year ratio: I prefer my MTB, unless I need to haul stuff.
Too fast? Yes, usually a wee bit too fast (Because everyone else does the same thing, and I want to adapt to the general flow of traffic), but then again, the speedometer of any given car is erring to the positive side. It is not allowed to show less than true speed. My actual speed is probably pretty near the limit.
Too slow? I rarely go too slow... If you go by the signs, that is: Still, I cannot possibly drive fast enough to satisfy some speed demons. If I exceeded the legal limit with 50km/h I would still have some nincompoop behind me trying to push me into going faster.
You also have to consider the road conditions: In the winter it would sometimes be akin to seppeku to try to reach the legal limit.
Tickets? Well, I got a parking ticket once. I found the sign after I got it: It sat 10ft above ground, on a wall. I suppose I could have seen if I had had a sun roof (which I don't), so I made a bit of noise and in the end I did not have to pay. :) I've had my licence since 1979, btw.

More like he was afraid I would break down and start crying or something. I'm sure that would work well, too ;)

Oh, I know those kinds of people who drive their car just behind you to piss you off so that you'll go faster. I refuse to exceed the limit because of them, so generally when one of those guys pisses me off, I drive slower just to show them who will piss the other off. :p

I don't brake or anything. I just gently let go of the accelerator, slow down to the speed limit and stay there. When they realize that it is counterproductive to push me, most of them back off or overtake me. It's basic psychology, really.

Once though, I really got the offender good. I had a particularly persistent bugger behind me, climbing all over my boot. Then I noticed a very big puddle (more like a pool, really) ahead of me: Normally one swerves to avoid them, but not this time: I went straight through the deepest part, aquaplaned over it and caused a truly magnificent splash in the process. Needless to say, the guy behind me got most of it right on top of him, and I could see him swearing wildly in my rear mirror (my hearing is not so good, so I can read lips to some extent). At the next traffic light he pulled up right beside me, but did not look at me. He just sat there looking straight ahead, obviously furious. That was when I realized that his side window was wide open    Got'cha! :D

I'm still digesting the news Weisenheimer is a lady. I don't think we've talked much but unless I'm mixing her up with someone else I swore W. was a young teenager.

I'm a so-so driver. I spend most of my time watching the car in front of meto keep a good braking distance. Definitely have to work on lokking LEFT--which flaw led to my Ford Escort being totaledand a life long dislike of State Farm Insurance adjusters and their attitudes. No fault state indeed.

Tickets: Speeding 72 in a 55 on hwy --reducedbecause I didn't have the trooper chase me but pulled right over. (2) Sliding thru a stop sign instead of completely stopping. (3) I think it was running a red light or speeding--forget now--been clean 16 years.

I think my favorite ticket had to be the time I got stopped for avoiding a red light and cutting through private property. Apparently if you cut through a businesses parking lot to avoid a red light you can get a ticket.

Anyways two days beforehand my friend did this exact same thing and I yelled at him because it was illegal. I was on the exact same street, there as a slow car in front of me so I cut through a gas station to get through the light quickly, however I was caught.

The officer stops me and I give him my excuses, I told him about yelling at my friend. I was making him laugh and I think he was digging me so I thought I was going to get out of it. The Officer asks how my record was, I told him it was "Ok". He takes my licesnse and goes back to his car about 3 minutes later I hear over his loudspeaker "Papaya will you please come over here". I get out of my car and walk over to the police car and he says:

"Now Papaya when someone asks how your driving record is and it looks like this (At this point he is gesturing to the computer screen mounted in his car) don't say "It's OK". "

The officer gave me a ticket for not changing my address on my drivers license in a timely manner.:D

My second favorite would have to be the time I was driving home from the bar. It was about 2:30~3:00 am, no cars on the road. I was stopped at a red light getting ready to make a left turn The light was taking forever so I decided to just go, as I was making my turn I saw headlights in the distance in my rearview mirror My first thought as that couldn't be as officer. I get about a block down and sure enough here comes the police car lights a flashing. I pull over and get out my license, registration, and proof of insurance before the officer even gets to the car. He comes up to the car I hand him my stuff and say "I know what I did" the officer walks back to his car (with my stuff) without even saying a word.

Good thing he didn't give you a breathalizer test. ;)

Reminds me of a story one of my old boss's told me. He was driving on the highway toward San Diego in the California desert and he was definitely speeding. A police car comes up. He sees the cop car. Police does not put on his lights, but my ex-boss pulls over anyway, thinking he got caught. Cop pulls up behind him and gets out of his car and walks to my ex-boss's car. Police is not saying anything yet. Ex-boss is the first to speak. "I guess you're going to give me a ticket." Cop looks at him. He says, I guess you're right." And he gives him the ticket. We'll never know but if he had slowed down and played it cool he might not have gotten anything. :D

The strangest moment I ever had was speeding in my '73 mustang~ V8 with some serious power for a young girl of 17..silly parents. , I was going WAY over..probably close to ninety...heading home from one of those.."I'm sleeping at her house, she's sleeping at mine" stories...ah..youth..anyway...heading home ... the cop...passes me going twenty miles faster than I! I slowed down after that, luck isn't a deep well.

I have always wondered who the person was that was going so fast that I wasn't worth a ticket?!

One girl at my school has been driving for 2 years now, since she's a year older than us and used to live in N.Z. where the driving age is a little less than over here. I've got a few friends who have started driving this year... And I get to start later on this year! So watch out everyone!

But it is so funny seeing friends like driving home... ESPECIALLY when they're a teachers kid and they're driving out the school carpark with the teacher in the passenger seat! :p And when we pass them on the road when we're on the bus and you look out at them and something seems weird... Then you realise it's because they're driving.... It still confuses many of us non-drivers

You don't want to know. Seriously, you don't. I'm still surprised with the fact they actually let me have a license - I'd have sworn nobody sane would give me one (maybe they aren't, though :D). In Rome, however, I'd have sworn that about most of the drivers around, so... I nicely fit in that craziness where the rules aren't, and even if they are, technically all ends up in passion anyway.

I think I'm an okay driver - I don't even drive that fast anymore(I used to when I first got the license, how stupid).Probably the stupidest thing I did so far was driving around 110 km/h(that's roughly 70 mph) in a 60 km/h (~40 mph) zone.I did it once and was very lucky not to get pulled over, and I promised myself I'd never do it again,so far I'm keeping to the promise.

Anyone scared of their car shouldnt be on the road. Fear causes hesitancy, and hesitancy causes accidents. The power of the car should be respected yes, but never feared

the only thing i've done is dent a very small portion of the front of my car senior year when i was trying to back out of the school parking lot. i blame my nerves on that because i was trying to ditch school without getting caught. haha -__-

however, i do find myself more nervous and forgetful when i'm driving with my friends in the car. i'm not as confident. but when i'm by myself i'm fine :/

I'm a pretty good driver. Occasionally I even stop for pedestrians, but cute fuzzy animals are just out of luck.

I've had my driving license for a bit over 1,5 years now, and I guess I'm an OK driver. Pretty good considering that I haven't go my license for that long and that I only get to drive while I'm staying with my parents, since I don't have a car where I study.

I stick to the speed limits pretty well and I've never got a ticket. At first I was really scared of driving, but soon I learned to enjoy it.

Gosh Papayahed, sounds like you're trying to go over a "things-you-shouldn't-be-doing on-the-road" checklist  :p (or are you:brow: :D)
You'll be a rebel without a licence if you don't behave... ;)
Great stories though!!

Still, I cannot possibly drive fast enough to satisfy some speed demons. If I exceeded the legal limit with 50km/h I would still have some nincompoop behind me trying to push me into going faster.

That is what I do too...

I hate these guys too...; I usually get them to slow down and stay at a reasonable distance from my car by using my windscreen washer so that with my own speed the water will also reach their windscreen making them slow down to turn on their wipers... that's usually long enough for me to change lane!!!

It's not very nice, but it's the most efficient way I've found!!:D

One parking ticket in 29 years driving - I parked for 63 minutes in a one hour zone and I was so mad about it - it was in the days when I couldn't walk well but before I started using a stick or had a Blue Badge and I could see the Traffic Warden coming up the street but I couldn't walk fast enough to get to my car before he did. Tsk - £20 down the drain.

Otherwise I haven't had any tickets but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm a good driver - it just means I haven't got caught - YET! :D

I don`t have a driving license, and I don`t have a car. I too wasn`t trained for driving lol. But I do drive my friend`s car at college. It`s as big as a city and one can`t go from campus/faculty to another walking. It would also be Hell if one goes to the main gate walking. So I use her car when we`re leaving, or going to another faculty to get something.
The good thing is that she trusts me. During an exam, a friend of us finished early and he needed a ride outside, she gave me the keys to drop him off.

But i`m always ready to hit any wall, lmao

I speed constantly. 40 is like my minimum. I'm hoping not to get a ticket anytime soon *knock on wood* (I really did just knock on wood, like, three different kinds :p) I hate going slow and I hate drivers that are slow. eugh. Almost got into a car wreck recently, not my fault though some drunk was trying to run a red light and I stopped just in time. for the extra intriguing details its in my blog. I don't really want to relive that situation.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

wait. Is it bad that I laughed? Hmmm...Yeah, my morals are like....ahem...well...maybe I will get over speeding, but until that day I still hope that I won't get into a wreck *knock on wood* and as odd as it may sound, I am very careful when I drive. I know that sounds hard to believe but it's true.

slow drivers bother me alot too. I was telling a friend of mine about a time I was stuck behind this person going 10 under the speed limit, and my friend was like, "and what's wrong with that?" ugh, if we ever go anywhere together, I hope I drive.

I don't mind slow drivers as long as they saty in the correct lane. If you're going below the speed limit please stay in the right lane so the rest of us can get around you.

Yes, slow drivers on the motorways are OK as long as they stay on the right lane. What I hate is when the trucks start to pass each other and block all the traffic :flare:

I don't mind if someone drives a bit slower than the speed limit, but I do get get irritated when people drive like 35 km/h when the speed limit is 50 km/h. I mean, in most of time there is just the one lane and your chances of passing that slow driver are minimal.

Driving at a good deal less than the speed limit is also dangerous.

Well... I'm not old enough to drive yet, but I have had experiences that indicate I should stay away from the driving seat.

1.) I was only 5 years old when my dad sat me on his lap and let me hold the steering wheel (naturally, he was controlling the car.) All off a sudden, I got very excited and jerked the wheel to the right violently. We never spoke of it again.

2.) This was only a couple of years ago when I went to a Go-kart centre for a friend's birthday. I went from driving too slow and irritating all those behind me, to nearly running over the instructor who didn't come near me for the rest of the day.

I just remembered 2 funny stories about driving. When I had switched jobs within my old company I had to go to Virginia for a month. I went with 3 other people. It was me, 2 women and one guy. We had decided we would let the guy do the driving. Boy , was that a mistake. One day we decided to take a drive to Virginia beach. I was sitting in the front seat and the other 2 women were in the back seat. We're driving along and all of a sudden we realize that John (the guy's name) was driving on the wrong side of the road. Thank god it wasn't a busy thoroughfare. We told him to pull over and made him get in the backseat and I took over the driving.
He also had a bad habit of getting on the highway, you know the lane that enables you to get onto the highway. A normal person would gain speed and then enter the lane. Well this dork would get into the entrance lane and come to a full stop, then wait for when he can get into the lane. After he did this a few more times, we never let him drive again.

But that's DANGEROUS  It's a miracle if that guy hasn't caused any accidents yet

Actually isn't there a slow speed limit?

True that slow people should definitely stick to their lane on highways because they can really be both dangerous AND annoying.

I got a ticket for going 148 km/h in a 100 km zone. Thank god the place I happened to be in didn't have the same severity of fines as Ontario.

HAha! It's okay, my first time to drive I wrecked into a tree....in my OWN FRONT YARD!!!!!

Don't worry you get over any problems you have really quickly. It takes like two times behind the wheel to get the hang of it.

I promised myself, after being in the car with one of my friends who is worse than me and will go 90 in a 40 zone, I will never, ever drive fast. That was a failure. I hate slow people. I understand that you don't have to go over the speed limit but people who are like ten below really upset me! I'm just like "hurrrrryyy upppp you nusiance!"

A car is an incredible expense. Between the purchase, the insurance, the maitenence, and repairs it just sucks you dry. I usually urge young people to do without if possible. Save your money for something important, like your future. Of course I understand that there are parts of the country that you cannot get around with public transportation and just getting around requires a car.

Get yourself an old rust bucket of a car & insurance to only cover other objects in collisions.
