Scott you might want to start with a consideration of what constitutes a dystopian work, and then examine 1984 along those lines. Namely, the author constructs Winston's life in detail: work, former marriage, childhood, "love" affair with Julie, fear, individuality, etc. I'm just thinking off the cuff here but it seems that Orwell builds Winston's existence to show what a hell this dystopia is; gives false hope of escape; forces him to betray everything he believes in; and ultimately destroys him.

To say any more would be to do your work for you. ;)
