I got the idea to start this thread after reading through the thread about guessing Lit-net users' real names. I invite everyone to tell us a little about your names (origins, meanings, etc.) If you're not sure, this will be a good oppurtunity to do a little research and maybe learn something new :)

I'll start:

Dustin, according to various sources, is either of Old German, Old English, or Norse origins. Some of my name's meanings are valiant warrior, Thor's stone, and dusty area (not too fond of that last one). I was actually named, in true southern fashion, after my grandfather's favorite wrestler, Dusty Rhodes (although no one has ever called me Dusty). The name is fairly common in the United States and, as I mentioned in the other thread, it gained a lot of popularity after "The Graduate" (starring Dustin Hoffman) was released.

Cool idea!
My name is Tiffany. It is of Greek origin, from "Theophania". It means "revelation of God". Girls born on January 6th usually are given some form of this name since it is the Feast of the Epiphany. Nowadays, my name carries connotations of upper-class luxury (Tiffany & Co. and Tiffany lamps) which I consider highly ironic since I hardly ever wear jewelry, at all. Also, my birthday is March 4th - not January 6th!

'Kareemah' is the transliteration[a spelling in English of the sound of the name in Arabic] of an Arabic word which carries the meanings 'honourable', 'of noble origin', and 'generous'. It is found in the Quran [the holy book for Muslims].

The masculine form of the word, Kareem, is used to describe the Quran thusly: 'Al Quran Al Kareem' which basicly means 'The Honourable Quran'.

There are a variety of spellings: Kareemah, Kareema, Karimah, Karima, Kareima etc.
The name also has connotations of 'gracefulness' associated with its meanings.

I am Haribol Acharya. In Sanskrit Hari means those who attract, and Acharya means teacher.

My ancestors were Gurus and that is how I got my title.

:crash:
My last name is Irish and means something along the lines of "little brown poet" which makes little sense to me. And my family crest is a sword with a serpent winding upwards around the sword. It's hard to reconcile the two.

Samantha is of Arabic origin and means "listener" or "one who listens". So that name suits me quite well! :)

When I was quite young I was given a thing with my name on it and the qualities people with the name Samantha supposedly have:

Samantha is original and daring (true!)
She does not give her word lightly (most definitely true)
She has a style which is uniquely her own (well that's one way you could put it :p)
She can be playful and loves to have fun (yep!)
She is unstoppable and dynamic (pretty much)
She enjoys star like qualities (well, not really)
She has the ability to channel her energies (true)
She likes to know what others think (hehe... true!)
She is drawn to the magic of art and music (absolutely true!)
She has a knack for making people laugh (I'd like to think so!)
