Well, if I can remember the story correctly, Coleridge was high when I wrote it. In fact, he just woke up from an ecstacy induced dream in which he dreamt Kublai Khan. Then, the guy just madly starts writing and is rudely interrupted by a knock at his door. The (insert expletive) actually STOPPED writing, answered the door, and promptly forgot the rest of the dream. Later on, he added a couple lines here and there, but nothing majour. Alas...
I realize that doesn't exactly answer your question. To be honest, I really don't know. Being drug-induced, I'm not sure it really HAS a point, but I may well be wrong.
