I'm working on my second book tentatively titled "Lay Me Down To Sleep". Its about a serial killer who murders children in a vain attempt to prevent them from being exposed to adult temptations later in life. What I really stink at is good character names. Anybody got any ideas? The book is set to be published in early 2006. I always like to hear input from other writers so if you want a sample of my writing, go to www.americanoutrage.net and read the first chapter of Outrage: We The People. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Sorry to say, but We think that serial killers haven't got any special names to show that they are evil. We think that they have got names like all the other people, so, if you live in an english-speaking country, then take a phone-book and open it in a random place.

Perhaps We are mistaken. Perhaps God or Fate or whatever makes plans and makes so that the evil people get names that sound evil and that good people get names that sound good and then we can see by people's names, who are good and who are evil.
Perhaps all human characteristics are shown in his/her name so that we could know everything about people when they introduce themselves and then we could group them all in little nice grey boxes by their names. We think that it is quite a good idea. Perhaps we should arrange it so?

Well I dont know..I mean Jack the Ripper had an ordinary name. And the same name "jack" is also used for the name of serial killer in this movie series, Profiler (used to be one of my faw shows). And how bout Hanibbal Lector, in Silence of the Lambs? Nothing less-ordinary about that name.

Taliesin, was God who gave u your name ;) ? Names are given by human, even (according to the bible) human was also the one who gave names to animals, and perhaps even plants.

Well i'm not sure about this, but i once read this novel. The main character's name in that novel is Saman, and in my native language, that name is considered so leftist. An appropriate name for a communist.
But one thing I'm sure is that there's this field of study in Criminology which study human's apperance (esp the face) and criminality. One of the theories mentioned that from a person's face, we could determined whether someone is a criminal/or have strong tendency to do a criminal act or not.
Well perhaps looks do matter afterall.

While I agree a serial killer can be easily named Bob Smith, I'm trying to find something that catches they eye and embodies evil. While Satan, Beelzebub, and the others are nice, yet unusable for my purposes, I'm looking for something more. Creative minds such as the ones in here can do better. I see this character as being meek and unassuming in everyday life so maybe Bob Smith would work. I'm still open for ideas. Thanks again.

A vain attempt?

So you're saying that murdering them while they were young didn't stop them being exposed to temptations later in life?

I gotta read me this book when it's writ...

(can't think of a good baddie name, sorry...)

*Thinks if We will explain the term "irony" to sub.*
*Decides that it would take too much time.*

We have the left eye of a mass murderer. :smash: The wonderful art of phrenology and suchlike.

Yes, and it is a great idea! We could measure people and then put them into little grey boxes, by, let's say the length of their nose. Then we will have a good, ordered civilication, where everything is measured and everyone will have got their place.

Depressing.

An exciting saga, September 12, 2004
Reviewer: Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
In Outrage: We The People, novelist Michael Bret Hood draws upon his many years of experience as a member of the U.S. Department of Justice to craft an impressive political thriller. An action-adventure story in which a group of American citizens calling themselves "The Patriots" decide to halt commerical and federal corruption by taking things into their own hands, they put everything on the line to broadcast their message and demand change - but at what price? An exciting saga, written with vibrancy and a sense of enthusiastic determination that disregards personal welfare for the importance of getting done what has to be done.

While in no way condone anything you're doing you should try a biblical name. Decide which biblical charecter matches yours the most and use it.
