I know of four kinds of haiku. No, that's not true. I know of hundreds of things people call haiku, or kaiku, or anti-haiku. I really mean I know of only four kinds of haiku standards. I'd love to hear from people who have heard of others--not the made up ones; the standards that have been generally accepted.
Japanese Modern(Shiki): 17 Japanese syllables broken into three lines of 5-7-5 with a seasonal theme.
Japanese Reform(Hekigoto): 17 Japanese syllables broken into three lines of 5-7-5 with no theme
American traditional: 17 American syllables broken into three lines of 5-7-5, seasonal theme
American Modern: American syllables broken into three lines that carry the pattern of X -- (X+2) -- X
