I was just watching the news and it was talking about how much junk there is surrounding in the earth in space. It didn't go into an in depth discussion about why there's so much... It just had like the images they've come up with showing how much junk is flying around out there.

Does any one know why there is SO much junk out there? And what is it that makes up this "junk"?

And how are we meant to get rid of it?

So what are your thoughts on space junk? Will it come back to us or will it just hang around out there?

What do you mean by junk exactly? what does it comprise of?

That was one of my questions! I'm really curious as to what it is because the only specific thing they mentioned was debris from when spaceships broke or exploded up there, but surely there would be more things than just spaceship debris, because according to the report there is HEAPS of junk up there, and I think it must be made up of more than just broken bits of rockets etc.

Thanks papayahed... That answered a few questions that the newsreporters didn't... I had a feeling wikipedia would have something on it but after having a firsthand experience with someone purposely incorrectly editing articles I try to avoid the site as much as possible!

Am I the only one that finds it kind of really bad that we've managed to spread all our mess and clutter into space as well? Was ruining earth not enough, we have to ruin space as well?!?

My flying saucer is orbiting earth too, posing as a toothbrush, so it won't get noticed, but it's not real space debris, just a piece of junk. The new one hasn't arrived yet, but it's going to be an awesome spaceship. Just two more earth years. Woohoo! :D

Okay so if I see a toothbrush hurtling down to earth from outerspace I'll know who to call

Is the docking station a set of false teeth?:p

I felt so sorry for Pluto when that happened! Yes I was sympathetic towards a big piece of rock. But it was a big piece of rock that lost it's entire identity and is now nothing more important than space junk  But therefore by disguising itself as Pluto, it would be pretty well hidden because not many people care any more now that it is no longer a planet :p. Poor Pluto :(

That is some interesting imagery there.... I can just imagine the toothbrush spaceship docking in a set of false teeth  But where are the false teeth? Where would the spaceship land if the teeth were still in the mouth of the owner?

I really haven't done much research on it, but the wiki article helped. Thanks, papaya ol' friend.

I am kinda bummed how even space isn't pure anymore, either, yes...but I do think there are far more important things in this world.

For a second I thought you were talking about this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pMH5plFUQw

She was killed by space junk...
