You're missing the pretext. I've quoted it in my signature. One is never successful in art, in the sense of perfection. Or at least transfering exactly what you've imagined onto the page. The most you could hope for is a successful failure.

This is probably no what he meant. This is a humorous encouragement for young artist.

That makes sense, though I always thought he was just being silly - as in, 'keep failing, and eventually you'll be really good at it'.
