hello,
I am currently writing an essay about male acts of punishment on females in Renaissance Tragedies, specifically the Duchess of Malfi.
I hope to argue that Webster's play represents patriarchal order asserting itself through chastening the assertive Duchess into submission, and, ultimately, death.
Do you think the overall message of the play is that the Duchess' subversive behaviour is harmful to society, or do you think his sympathetic portrayal of her suggests he questions the fate of the Duchess?
