that you could imagine ever giving someone?

I just read this in A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley, in which the narrator says of her sister:

"The fact was that we had known each other all our lives but we had never gotten tired of each other."

Anybody you could say that about?

I could probably say that about my friend Valentina. we have known each other for about 16 years (I'm 19) and never got tired of each other...I mean, our friendship has changed (we used to be best friends, now we're just good friends), but still, she is one of the few people I can always turn to, and even if we we spend little time together, with her I feel I am really free to be myself!
mmm...now that I come to think about it, I don't compliment people very often. I say "I love you" or "you have done a good job", but that's it. Nothing deeper or more original than that. I wish I could tell my closest friends how I feel about them and how much I enjoy their company, but it seems that I can find no other words than "I love you".. :(

WHAT! Those are the only words you can find... But, signorina, what better words could there be?

I was out once with a guy my age whom I'd known in high school and we got to talking about love. He said that he never said "I love you" to anyone. I expressed my surprise. He responded by asking me what love was, could I show it to him...

I felt so sorry for him. I suspect that might have been because his first marriage ended painfully, that he felt he had been betrayed.

It's possible that every time you say I love you to someone, it enlarges your heart a little or your capacity to feel it!

It once became so habitual of me to say "did i ever tell u i love u?!" that i screamed it out to a physics teacher once (accidentally of course).

With the exception of a few family (and when I was a quite young), I don't recall ever actually saying "I love you" to someone.

I genuinely believe that I have everyone beat. :D I was with my brother even before I was born! And, as far as I can tell, the compliment mentioned above is an understatement of the relationship that my twin brother and I have.

If I were to say that, I would have to mean it with all of my very being. People toss it around these days like it's nothing I think :)

I've never heard anyone say anything like that before, that's such a sweet sentiment. Good for you :thumbs_up

As for compliments... I guess it depends on who you are, who gives it, and what your situtation is really.

From a male friend: "You're not ugly"
 Haha, sorry I'm just kidding...anyway...

From a Teacher: "You could do anything you want to, the world is your oyster"

From a Friend: "I've never met anyone like you" (Can be taken in a positive or a negative way)

From an...admirer?: "If you were to stand in a crowd of a million people, I could pick you out immediately because you're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."

I guess I sort of shoot off the 'I Love You' compliment pretty readily to my best friends of the opposite sex.

That's my way of complimenting.

Except I try to say it with real feeling and affection. I just think they shoot off one of the greatest compliments in the world purely because I shot it off first and they don't really mean it...

The only real other compliment I use is 'I like your hair'.

Oh, another I use is 'A socially cultured woman! I like it!' if these people have seen films and read literature that I consider mandatory for the human race.

With people of the same sex, I guess I say things like 'I'm liking it, James!' and 'Aww man, you're a legend!'

Well, they're pretty much all of the best compliments I use off the top of my head.

"Because of you, I have started thinking that this world is a good place to be in."

"You are very caring." (I love people who care for their fellow human-beings)

people around here would probably hate me for tossing I Love You around... but it's my way of saying thank you, especially with people who go out of the way (and the extra mile) to do things for me. i am a person who compliments people a lot but they're always sincere (otherwise i put honest answers in euphemisms, lol). as far as bigger compliments i don't do too well there. i give it to them in poems and letters :)

Probably my younger brother. We do EVERYTHING together: talk, sing, act (privately of course), ask advice...Heck we even talk about what we want in future spouses! And he's only 14!

Oh and when my ex and I were breaking up, he felt so angry at himself and kept asking me why I didn't feel the same anger,or worse, towards him. He was crying and kept asking why I didn't hate him or scream nasty things or anything like that. I told him why, and then he very genuinely, through the tears, said to me "You're the nicest person I've ever met".
That meant a lot...coming from him,at that time,in that way,and from what I knew about how a lot of people have treated him before.
I think the greatest compliments I could ever receive are ones like that- ones that let you know you've brought some light to someone, given them some hope or encouraged them to dream or keep going on when everything seems dark. It makes you feel like you've accomplished something worthwhile.

Who cares? Honestly, if you're really being serious, you should take in consideration everyone that made that mistake rather than directing your comments toward an individual in particular. ;)

Well, then who cares about that too? (Damn it, I forgot that without putting smileys, a person is considered to be mean and unfriendly by some).

Well, my cousin plays piano (and way better than I, though he denies it for some reason). Anyhow, I told him after hearing him play a particularly tender Nocturne of Chopin's -- that the Nocturne was written with his playing in mind. He was deeply pleased with that. But I really meant it. That Nocturne had me in tears, he played it so beautifully.
