View Full Version : Help finding 2 books, similar plot

My middle school son needs to read two books with similar plots to compare and contrast. Ex. given by the teacher are Pride and Prejudice - Sense and Sensibility; Call of the Wild - White Fang
He is not interested in the first pair and has read the second.

Any suggestions?

Do they have to be of a particular time period? Theme? Or is it anything goes?

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn?

Oops,I just noticed you said middle school.Now,if I got it right,he should be around 15-16?My first recommendation was under the impression your son was younger.

Anyway,why not Gulliver's Travels and,let's say,Candide?Both as great examples of brilliant satire?Or,compare two plays?For instance,Macbeth and Hamlet?

He is 12. Those may be a bit over his head. He already read Tom Sawyer.

The Prisoner of Zenda by Hope
and The Mad King by Edgar Rice Burroughs
The two novels are quite similar.
If you want one that it similar but not all that terribly similar, then Royal Flash by George McDonald Fraser would fit.

No, I said I'm his age what genre does he like? If you want to be particular I am 2 years older than he is but I think thats close enought to say that I am his age.

Maybe you just got confused with me saying I am his age in relation to the person who posted the thread, not their son in middleschool. (If that makes any sense at all)

Sorry if there is confusion, but I am a 14 year old girl looking for book recommendations on another thread

Pride and prejudice- North and south.
Theme is the love/hate. Similar occurances between Lizzie and darcy/Margaret and Thornton.

If he likes mystery/ghost novels: The Intruders by E.E. Richardson and Whispers From the Dead by Joan Lowry Nixon. Those are the two most prominent to me.
Really though he can take any two books from the same genre and compare and contrast them.

If he can read short stories I recommend The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat by Edward Allen Poe. I had to compare those for school and they were a bit too creepy for me but he might enjoy them.

thanks for all your suggestions - right now he will see if he can read the prisoner of zenda and the mad king - they look interesting to him.

They are pretty good for a 12 year old. If he has to write book reports on both, it will be easy to do the second one.
