LETS PLAY A GAME!

Give your three most memorable quotes from the book and write why it's significant to the novel.

I'll play:

The best one is in my sig. I think it's self-explanatory.

Couple of other favourites:

Ignorance is strength. Many people seem to live their lives with this as their central tenet.

[Parsons] was an active but fattish man of paralysing stupidity. Just plain beautiful English.

I think this is a good game :)

In the A-level examination you are expected to quote to back your points up, and i think by making a little bank of quotes that are easy to remember, is better than wasting time in the exam looking through the novel for 10 minutes to find one quote!!

Soo....my personal favs are....

"He had only six thoughts. The pain in his belly; a piece of bread; the blood and the screaming; O'Brien; Julia; the razor blade" --> Just ironic how Julia who was a major part of Winstons life, now is less important than a piece of bread!!

"A party member lives from birth to death under the eye of the Thought Police."-->Shows how there is no individuality, everyone is just part of this controlling regime

"She [Julia] had become a physical necessity, something that he not only wanted but felt he had the right to.-->Theme of patriarchal society and subordination of women. Winston feels he has the right to Julia.

Orthodoxy means not thinking - not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness. 1984
