Hello,
My name is Deanna C. Dilley. I am a 28 year old from Ohio. I was born with rare birth defects called Beals Syndrome. In lamens terms, my joints throughout my body are tight or contracted. I am also legally blind in my left eye. Also, I have mild hearing and heart concerns which aren't as big of a deal at the moment. I also have developmental delays and therefore am somewhat slower than most people my age.
I am a Special Olympics athlete and compete in bowling (September to October) and track & field (April to June). I opted out of basketball for this season, mainly because I'm lucky to make one basket in practice. :) I am also in Friends Forever, which is a parent run bowling league from September through April. In the summer some of us play softball. There is also another special needs social group I'm involved with. We have a meeting once a month to plan for that months activity. We go to local amusement parks, gambling trips, other bus trips, have an annual Bingo party and much, much more.
Due to my disabilities, a few years ago I began writing poems for a poetry book I eventually want to publish some day. Special Poetry for Special People will contain poems for and about people with various disabilities. Most of these poems are fictional; but some are based on myself or friends/co-workers. If you or a friend or family member have a disability you want me to write about, please let me know and I'll see what I can do.
I also just started writing poems for a tribute book about various people who have made an impact in American History. One of these people is Hattie Larlham, who lived in Cleveland, Ohio and took several disabled children who more or less were abandoned by or unabled to be cared for by there own families. Those Mrs. Larlham is now deceased, The Hattie Larlham Foundation is still up and running better than ever some 40 to 50 years since the grand opening. If you're interested in finding out more about Hattie Larlham, feel to visit her website at www.hattielarlham.org. Others in my American tribute book are Johnny Cash, Jim Henson, Rosa Parks, Juliette Gordan Low, Annie Oakley, Christopher and Dana Reeve, and many more. I am still searching the internet on other American icons and write as I read their biographies.
Other hobbies include hanging out with my friends, my family (I'm an only child, still living with my parents; but have several aunts and uncles and 1st and 2nd cousins throughout Ohio, Massachusettes, and West Virginia.), and my two dogs (Cleopatra or Cleo, an 8 yr. old Golden Retriever and Sassy, a 6 yr. old Boxer).
Well I think that's about it. Sorry if this is a bit long. I tend to go overboard sometimes.
