Oh I love Monty Python, though I prefer the movies to Flying Circus. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is my fave - especially the 'Knights of Ne', Castle Anthrax and the killer rabbit! Even the titles are cool!

does A Fish Called Wanda count as a Monty Python film? probably not, but it's one of my all time fave films and I just thought I'd mention it

I had to choose other: The Lumberjack.
And believe me: I am a fan.. I used to watch the Pythons on TV in the 70's, and they usually reduced me to tears of laughter. I really love that sick limey humour.
Still, I have to say that they are but in 2nd place: I think Dave Allen was the maestro of the short sketch.

I love Monty Python! I had to choose other. Way too many to choose from. My personal favourites are
The Parrot
Knights that say Ni
The Funniest Joke (you know the one where anyone who read the joke died from laughing too much!)
Lumberjack song is Great
But then there is the movies...
The Meaning of life had me doubled over the first time i watched it. The Sperm song is a killer!
And i love the life of Brian!
"Hes not the Messiah! Hes a very naughty boy!":p
Humm... looks like i'm going to have to watch some MP...
but on a different note...
What happened to my some Mothers Do A've 'Em DVDs.....

I watched Monty Python sketches back in the seventies, as soon as they appeared on German TV (in English with German subtitles). I thought they were hilarious. Then I did not hear about them for a long time until I visited the London BBC studios two years ago. The shop had some DVDs, which I bought at once. And guess what - my favourite sketch wasn't there! :bawling:
Pity I only remember the situation ( a job inteview) and the line "Good night, ding ding ding" - said by the personnel manager to test the candidate. Does anyone know the title of this sketch and whether it can be found on youtube or somewhere? I'd be very grateful.
Otherwise, The Lumberjack and The Dead Parrot and Silly Walks and and ... are my favourites. However, I don't like the movies as much as the sketches - except The Life of Brian - singing "Always look on the bright side of life" while hanging on the cross. :D

I'm the exact opposite, I love the movies, except for Meaning of Life. That one was just too much for me, I don't know if it was the live organ donor sketch or the the restaurant one, "It's wafer thin!" but I will never watch that one again. Now Holy Grail and Life of Brian I can watch over and over again and never get sick of. :thumbs_up
I remember watching the tv shows on PBS with my dad and brother. It's all just so bizarrely funny and silly. The great thing now is sharing it with my kids, I think one of the sketches they first responded to was the Spanish Inquisition sketch...that and the bloody picnic one, remember that? A bunch of proper Englishmen and women wearing white and for some reason or another, they all start loosing fingers and limbs and such and there's just a ridiculous amount of blood. That one made them laugh and me worried. ;) :p

I agree with Niamh on the World's funniest joke. My favorite line was that accidentally read two consecutive words, and almost died from hysteria (I paraphrase of course.)

"And then you shall cut down the greatest tree in the forest..with... a HERRING!"
hihihi
Yeah, I've acquired the complete collection of the flying circus on DVD, as well as all the films. Big fan. Can't express it enough. I even have the audio version with commentry on my MP3.... Which is slightly peculiar.
Favourite sketch? Yeah right. It just doesn't exist.

When my nephews were little and they couldnt pronounce niamh properly they use to call me Ni. There was one time they were chasing me around the garden going "NiNiNi!" All i could think about was monty Python and i was in stitches. So i asked them to get me a srubery!:p

Oh yes, these two are great. Especially the bishop having to start all over again and again and again ...; what struck me most in the other one were the harmless words "I say, anyone for tennis?", which created all the mutilations.

Yes Chava, I think I agree, a favourite sketch doesn't really exist.. there are just far too many.. I have all the films and all the seasons on DVD as well... the audio would be good to... where did you get that? what's it like?
Niamh that is great story!! see how Monty Python affects us all in our daily lives!!! a shrubbery!!!!!
Idril and Barbara, the bloody picnic is so good!!! and the spanish inquisition, I love how he keeps adding things, in and out, his entrance just isn't perfect...
that reminds now of Cardinal Richilieu in The Court Case over the parking ticket, the pleading for clemency over issue of family and freedom!!!!!! the speech is so funny, and then John Cleese interviewing the dead guy in the coffin, and then bringing in the Cardinal Richilieu impersonator, and inspector dim catching him by saying he died in the 1600s, and then singing about being a window cleaner... and then John Cleese's song about being an engine driver... so funny!!!!!! here's the link!!!

some of the sketches are pretty gross, though, as Idril said.
edit to add:
John Cleese is so cute  (or at least he was cute back then). anyone else got a crush on him?

*raises hand...* though I was always more fond of Palin. Cleese's searing intellect is a little intimidating, and Palin always seems so frinedly and confused.... ;)

Oh, me too! In fact I found A Fish Called Wanda a little hard to watch because of the abuse the poor man suffered. There's just something so crazy adorable about the man. :p
